The noly bad part is the Resident Evil name. It is undeserving of that burden.

I havent played it yet, but from reviews in a magazine I have read, it sounds like a dragons lair rip off.
if any of you remeber dragons lair, the entire game was full motion video, and to get past certian things, you had to press a combo of buttons. Sounds VERY similar to resident evil 4. |
Well, when is Resident Evil Apocalypse coming to theaters? I hope it is as good as the first. Most Resident Evil games are good, they really capture the mood, very dark and gloomy, and they can pose to be quite suspenseful, not scary though, almost.

Shades wrote: Sweet! More sensless violence! But no really. See, I fell in love with the first resident evil, it was awesome, it was a great, action, adventure horror/thriller game. IMO it perfectly balanced puzzels and combat and had some really intresting monsters to deal with. Ever since the 1st one, I think they have gone down hill, less puzzels, more weapons and stuff to kill. It really blows IMO. So now, it would seem to me then, they just gave up, and did what they were slowly doing in the first place, makeing a fps. =P I'll try renting it tonight. |

Yeah aside from the button pressing everything you said doesn't pertain to RE4. The only time they have the button pressing to avoid situations is during a cutscene or randomly set into the environment to keep you on your toes, for example: You encounter a boss and his minion during a cutscene and he's about to press a button to send you into a pit, you throw a knife at his hand to stop him, he's in shock and his minion grabs the knife and quickly chucks it at you and you have to press a button quickly to dodge it.

It's more fitting of the title "Survival Horror" because there are tons of baddies swarming you and you can actually interact with stuff to bar doors, windows and kick down ladders to keep the zombies away, although in RE4 they aren't really zombies, and they are quick too.

Believe it, it's totally revamped, thus why it's gotten good reviews.

I enjoyed renting it so much that I may buy it. The annoying camera angles from the early games are gone. It's a bit more of a twitch game, with no auto lock to fall back on in combat, but there are still plentiful puzzles and interesting little discoveries.
Normally I hate escort missions, but in RE4 they really handled it well. Ashley is a smart girl for an escort mission AI. She ducks out of the line of fire when you pull a weapon and even points out some useful strategies in different parts of the game. My only complaint about Ashley is that the command button for her is too close to the action buttons. Once I told her to hide in a large bin while I fought a hoard of irate villagers and accidently whistled for her to come out. She must have heard it over the whine of both chainsaws, because she jumped out into the midst of a dozen villagers. I really didn't think the cut scene dodge buttons added anything to the game, except to make it more twitch based and turn off the fans with inadequate reflexes. People with mediocre reflexes like me will have no problem. It did remind me of Dragon's Lair, but the cut scene dodging is a rare dash of spice, not the heart of the game engine. The people who make game controllers had to have bribed Capcom to put in the rapid button mashing segments. It certainly wasn't for the players' enjoyment. I don't think it is fun to tap the same button as quickly as possible until my thumb. The weapon upgrades added some variety, but I still don't get why the merchants were there. It added to the game play, but made no sense in the story. I'm in the spanish countryside where everyone I meet is working for the people trying to kill me, and here are these guys with bright blue beacons that are not only willing to do business with me, but will also upgrade my weapons so that I can kill their neighbors more efficiently. If I was a villager, I'd stick my pitchfork in his bum. Hmm, this post turned out more critical than I'd intended. Dispite the shortcomings I listed, I really loved the game and will certainly be playing it again soon. |

They mentioned something about the plaga and if the host is strong enough it could rebel, maybe the merchant is rebelling and helping you out to kill the others? Just a thought.

I bought it and played it the whole weekend and beat it. I am currently 2/3 of the way through it again. It is an awesome game and Capcom has really redone everything that was wrong with the others. The graphics are improved, the dreaded camera angles are resolved, their is a FPS/TPS style of aiming which adds the strategy of head shots and limb shots, lots of weapons, minigames like The Mercenaries and Assignment Ada (AA isn't that good but it unlocks the Chicago Typewriter gun w/ infinite ammo, the Mercenaries is very good and can raise adrenaline), huge bosses with their own tactics needed to beat them, and the AI is improved. You can upgrade your weapons in an RPG-style fashion and when you have purchased all the upgrades for a weapon, you can by an exclusive upgrade for it to max one of its attributes (100 ammo, faster shooting, improved headshots, faster reload). The guns include several types of shotguns, sniper rifles, rocket launchers, 3 grenades, scopes, stocks, pistols, magnums, and mine throwers. RE4 has a lot of replay value as you can unlock more stuff and weapons. The game from the beginning to end is fun and keeps you surviving against hordes of zombie-like people, beasts, and mutations. In the first part, I liked hiding-away in buildings and blocking the exits until they broke in through back windows and doors, leaving me cornered with my trusty shotgun. The voice-overs are much better than the other games in the series. The cut-scenes are not pre-rendered and it is refreshing with the use of buttons during the scenes. You'll be fighting someone and it will cut to a cut-scene and you will have to tap A or B or a combination to dodge certain attacks. One confrontation between a sub-boss (who you will end up fighting as a big boss later on) is all "cut-scenes" (though they are not pre-rendered, so they are pretty much just part of the normal game) so you have to tap buttons to avoid their attacks. The different characters are unique and have their own traits. Capcom has fixed the problems from their other games and made-up for those problems and frustration by creating Resident Evil 4. All nay-sayers have obviously not played RE4.
