Are there any Van Halen fans on the board? I just got back seeing them in concert. I've seen many bands that I like more then them, but there show has impressed me the most. Great band live.

Let me just say that Anthony Hopkins made a better Van Halen than Hugh Jackman did. :P

The burning question that must be asked of the Van Halen fans on the board is this:
Roth, Hagar, or the new guy (don't know, or care what his name is)? I'm a David Lee Roth fan, myself... |

Not meaning to hijack Stealth's thread here or anything, but how long have you been playing, Mike? I downloaded some of the music you've made, and it sounds absolutely fantastic! I started playing around 6 months or so ago, so I'm still very much a newbie. :)
I have two electric guitars, one is a Fender Squier S73 and the other is a cheap Yamaha EG-112C. I have an old acoustic, too. It's probably about 20 years old. It's a Harmony, and it needs to be repaired, though. ~>Volte |

To respond about Hagar, or Roth. I liked the sound of Roth more, but after seeing Van Halen in concert with Hagar on vocals, I like the band itself and Hagar much more. They are not my favorite band, but out of all the shows I have seen, they come out on top. Great solos, everything.

All four of my electric guitars have something to do with Eddie Van Halen (the pictures are way old, but the guitars are still the same). I saw them 8 times on the last tour in '98, and twice before that. I've met the band once and met Eddie another time after that. I've gone to 3 different Van Halen fan conventions and have hung out numerous times with other fans I met on the internet. Obviously, I have all their albums plus the two concert DVDs and a few bootlegs.
I'd say 1998 was the peak of my Van Halen fan days. They were easily my favorite band then. Nowadays, I've been more into instrumental guitar, with Joe Satriani topping the list for several years now. I've been branching out and discovering new subgenres of music and loving it. Van Halen kind of fell apart after their '98 tour and I started to lose interest. I'll always love the music, but I'm no longer obsessed. :)
I decided to skip this tour in the interest of saving money. From early tour reports that I read, it sounded like that was a good decision. People were saying Eddie was just a pathetic shadow of his former self, making tons of mistakes with extremely sloppy play. I downloaded a couple of videos shot from the audience at a couple shows this summer and confirmed it. His playing was horrible. I've seen him near his prime, so I didn't want to ruin it with this.
Then apparently he got better, and played probably the best show of the tour in Los Angeles, where I would have seen them if I'd gone. Oh well! Still glad I saved the money - the ticket prices for even the nosebleeds were a little high (but not as bad as money-grubbing nostalgia acts like the Eagles and the Rolling Stones!).
Have you seen the "Live: Without A Net" DVD? That show is incredible, Eddie absolutely was in his prime. I'd love to hear how the show you saw compared with it. Glad you had a good time. :)
