I reallllly want to download byond on the school computers, anyone know any good ways of hiding the byond program so the teachers cant figure out I've downloaded it? So far no teachers know I use byond, tryin to keep it on the down low, I was thinking of renaming it something like Teacher doc. and changing the icon to somebook or search pic, I'd keep it in a small empty file....I don't have any other ideas, if anyone out there has done it (when they're not allowed to, as I am) please post how!!!
Thx in advance

Installing BYOND on a school computer is a truly awful idea. I understand that you want to play of course, but this causes a million problems. Among other things, it's difficult to keep it set up correctly because of directory permissions.
Also a problem is that multiple players will probably use it, and the hub will start to get them mixed up when it comes to banning, etc. You could inadvertently tie yourself to a troll, which is never a good thing. Best to avoid this if you can. Really BYOND was never intended to be used on a communal computer--only on a family system. I think it'd be nice though if we could eventually have some sort of take-along version you could fit on a CD. Lummox JR |
Well, what I do when I hide BYOND from my brother is delete the unistaller, so it won't show up in Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs, then, you'll want to right click the BYOND folder, select properties, then check off "hidden". This will make the folder hidden, to view the hidden folder, goto the top tab "View", Preferences, then choose you "I would like to view hidden/(something)" rat, something along those lines.

It's a bad idea, but try downloading the upgrade package, and not the install. Unzip it, and rename it something like Microsoft Network Control Panel... Ungh... uh, I didn't say this... *cough*

I understand the reason for not putting it on a public server but not many people will know, I'll be the only one that is using/opening byond on only one computer in the lab, my friends won't know where to look, and I only need to put it on one computer because I'm not showing everyone, anyways I'll try a few things but it probably won't work out. Thx.

Well, when I downloaded games on my school computer (before the sites were blocked) I put it all in a folder and named the folder "Social Studies" or "Math" whatever you prefer. A teacher will see it and just walk by. It is not like they'll see the folder and say "What the heck do you have in that 'Math' folder?! Hiding something, huh?" I mean, that would never happen.
If you happen to be playing BYOND on your school computer you will be in fear the whole time of a teacher walking by. You'll be minimizing it every two seconds, looking around you, ETC. you won't even have time to play the game. It's useless. Have you ever realized when you are watching/doing something that you are not supposed to be doing, you always think you hear something? Such as your parents coming, or someones opening the door, ETC.? Well, that is just human nature. Like I said, you will hardly have anytime to play the game, you'll be too busy worrying about the consiquenses. Also, can't you just wait a few hours until you get home, then play BYOND?! It will save you a lot of trouble! |
Since I don't attend public school I am not sure of the consequences, but I sure know that most teachers don't even notice that it is a game when they walk by. Back in junior high I used ot sit there and keep the program open and play the entire class period away and when my teacher would walk by and ask me what I was doing I would say that this was an educational game. After a while she got curious so I opened up dream maker and showed her that you could make games and stuff with it, and said it was an educational tool. After that I got off the hook for it.

I have been in a public school all the way from PK to 10th grade. Now that I am a junior, I switched to a new school, a private school, because I heard their football team was amazing and I needed to join a good team. Well, let me tell you, this school is so damn strict. I would not even THINK about THINKING about a game in that damn school....

secondly dont think your teachers are stupid, trust me they arnt!
heres an idea, put the whole BYOND folder onto a CD, anything you do after that, save it to a floppy disk, this includes coding games (icons arnt a good idea, too much space wasted)
nothing in the BYOND folder should need to change apart from downloading a whole game, playing a game should be ok.
this should all work in theory, but its not guaranteed.
