I read on the U.S. Copyright Office's site that you don't have to register for copyright but you can't claim infringement on the copyright unless your registered. Does anyone know how you know if someone is registered for copyright or not?

Can't you do a copyright search at the U.S. Copyright site? mabye not...but, if thats not there then I have no idea.

Yes, there is a search on their website.


Also, for a cheap way of proving you've created something [first], put it in a sealed envelope and mail it to yourself. Then don't open it. The envelope will have a US Post date on it. Of course, this is for tangible[spelling?] things. Computers [files] just have the right-click "Date Created:" thing.

Which can be changed, so it's no guarantee of anything.

Or you could print out some form of it and do what airjoe said, I suppose. Wouldn't work for everything, but it might in some cases.
