The Un-Offical game reviewer for BYOND is now out! With the help of FreeWbs I'll start reviewing the great games of BYOND. Giving them a grade of A-F, A being the best of course. http://www.freewebs.com/mwcriticizing
Nice :) We need more review sites like that.

I was thinking of making one a while back, but I'm currently too bogged down.
Hmm, well I'm gonna give you some advice to improve this site.. first of all its Repetitive not repeative =)
Also, when criticizing a game I beleive that lag should not play a role in the grade you give the game. Also, I think you should have permission from the creators of the games before you review it. Thats all because after seeing this site I have this nagging want to create a Game Review site myself =)
One more thing..How could you give My Life as a Spy a D-?

Nicely laid out site, good job. Just need to work on your spelling, as Troglodyte mentioned. =)

And I'm going to second his other criticism, too: HOW DOES MLAAS GET A D MINUS??? The scoring seems pretty damn arbitrary to me. If you actually knew anything about the game, and had played it for more than about 2 seconds, you would give it a much better rating. I guarantee it.

Thank you. And the reason MLAAS got a D- was because of the pathetic players going around killing each other (I know thats the point of the game) but a new player fresh from the spy academy walks in gets out of safe mode(DEAD). And as for my spelling :p I spell how I want to :D. You all may have different opinions about my rating if you do than send me an email at. [email protected]
Thanks

It's your rating and opinion, so people might think different but that doesn't matter since we all have different opinions.(Although complaining about Thieves in a game about Spies is sort of weird.)

I have several nags about your site, although overall I think it is good. Firstly fix the very obvious spelling and grammatical errors. Secondly, you cannot, CANNOT judge a game on it's players. That's like saying a car is **** because the driver crashed it. Thirdly, for Proelium you gave it an A- although it had NO negatives? I believe your ideas and intentions are good but you have to improve your scoring system.

Keep up the good work, and get the A++ stamp reading for this Christmas when Dolores Vindicta comes out.

If a game is multiplayer only, then I think it would be valid to judge a game based on the players. The game might be fun (though I do think otherwise) but the game requires other people, and if those other people make the game less fun, then that hurts the game.

It'd be like comparing driving to the game. Driving can be fun, but if people keep crashing into you, its not fun. Its not your fault or your car's fault, but it makes driving no fun. It might not be completely the fault of the game, but if the other players ruin the game that much for others, then the game should be designed to prevent that. That's why there are rules to driving. If anyone just drove however they wanted, there'd probably be more crashes than there are now.

Basically, if the game demands for there to be many live players, then the players should be a valid way to judge the game.
Where can we submit/recommend games for you to review?
In response to Ease
Actually, yes, when a game is like MLaaS where it is completely multiplayer like that, you are supposed to judge at least 50% of it on the players.

There are many things that can be done to that game to straighten it up right, especially when dealing with players, that aren't in it.

It is your oppinion. It could get a little rancid with the people out here complaining about your oppinion, but don't worry about it. If there were many more sites like this they could see that these sites aren't showing the entire community's oppinion.

I disagree. I played it for much MUCH longer than him, and I have to agree with him, and I am not the only one. Remember, a game needs to appeal to newbies as well as oldbies, in which MLaaS really, REALLY does not appeal to newbies. I feel the only people that could really enjoy that game are people who love to piss people off.

I played as a weak, green character on MLAAS for several months (before I managed to get up to rank 20).

Fact: Green is the weakest team in terms of combat.

Fact: Green gets raided the most; because the players often can't defend themselves very well, the base security is terrible, and it's in an exposed location.

Fact: I still enjoyed it. At that point, I was playing on a 56k modem from half-way around the world, so I copped the worst of any lag there was. But I was still able to run away, and I still enjoyed the game. Once I ranked up to the maximum, I still didn't see the point of combat that much; I was largely pacifist by choice unless attacked. I was enjoying the game, and I wasn't pissing anyone off.

Although I do agree that MLAAS is somewhat combat-oriented (especially the purple team, which is extremely adept at pissing people off in new and exciting ways), that is slowly changing with the addition of the new, pacifist white team, the weakening of many of the weapons, the fixing of a large number of bugs which were being exploited, and many other small changes. The guide system is getting rid of the worst players, and helping the newbies.

Just because you played it in the past and didn't like it, that doesn't mean that it isn't better now. You still might not like it; that's your opinion, and I respect that. But just because you personally don't like it does not make it a bad game.

Alot of the aspects that I hated before maybe gone, for I haven't played it since they implimented white team. Though, I'm sure one aspect is still there: The fact that there is nothing to do when your 20 but pick on newbies. Why? None of the oldbies ever want to fight, and if they do, they run if they are weak. Sure you can kill them with a suprise trap-attack, but most people do not train traps. Other than that, it comes down to one of the multiplayer-rpg aspects that I hate: Everything counts on how powerful your equipment is, once your strongest level. I like a game where you can actually fight, instead of the only method of fighting-combat be to click the enemy faster than hes clicking you.
In response to Kunark
The fact that there is nothing to do when your 20 but pick on newbies.

It does need more to do at high ranks, I agree. (Although the white team has partially allievated that; it's infamously hard to join, and even harder to rank up in.)

I like a game where you can actually fight, instead of the only method of fighting-combat be to click the enemy faster than hes clicking you.

That's why I don't like fighting in MLAAS; it's boring. =P
Nice site. Here is some feedback.
  • The game should probably be given ranks in several areas, as well as a overall mark. (Ie, Sound, Graphics, Gameplay, ect)
  • The reviews need to be longer to be of any real use.
  • You need to work on your reviewing skills a little (No offence, but you seem to just write what you liked and what you didn't like).
  • A HUB entry link would be nice.
  • Some screenshots for each game (Thumbnailed).
  • Although it isn't possible on Geocities, it would be nice to have a "Comments" section, like on BYONDscape articles.
  • When you get some more reviews, you'll want to order them and split them into multiple pages (Ie, "Page 1: A to B").
  • Only mention lag if the lag is due to poor programming.
  • Take into account how well the game was programmed, how well structured it is, stuff like that.

Anyway, those are just what I think.

I have to agree with DarkView: Not many people will really pay attention to your reviews unless they go in-depth about it, including also giving grades on other aspects such as single player gameplay, multiplayer gameplay, graphics, sound, instructional content, etc. As well as more in-depth comments where you post your comments about it. It might also be nice to put how many hours or minutes you actually played it, for some RPGs, action, or adventure games could get much better after the beginning.

I too was about to start my own little website with BYOND reviews, but my webhost went down for good at the last minute. If possible, I would like to possibly submit any reviews I write to you to be put up, if that would be alright with you? If so, AIM me at the screen name Zboyy.

Postscript: If you can include rants, too, that'd be a plus, yeah.
