When I connect to the internet, it's way to loud, I can hear it all the way downstairs. Is there anyway I can make it quieter?

There are two popular ways to go. First, the simple way. Go to the control panel, modem and phone options, then go to the modem tab, click your current modem then properties. You should now have the volume control looking you right in the eye.
The other way, for those who can't do that, it to grab an old/cheap pair of headphones and plug them into the modem (A lot of modems have headphone jacks). If you can still hear it/its annoying you having headphones on your desk, just cut the cords off. The headphones don't have to work, as long as they are plugged in they will silence the modem. | |
Interesting... I wasn't aware that modem volume could be controlled from the control panel... And actually, mine doesn't have the option in the modem properties, so apparently, it depends on the modem...

Not really. The OS uses the same panel regardless of what modem you're using. What version of windows do you have?

I'm using Win 98, but nevermind my last comment, anyways...
I must've been looking in the wrong location (that or I'm really blind), as a check just now revealed that I can in fact switch my modem speaker on or off via a slide control on that panel... Unfortunately, though, for me it's either full on, or full off... But I imagine that other brands of modems support a full volume range (otherwise it'd just be a check box, rather than a slide adjustment) But oh well, I guess you learn something new everyday...lol | |
In fact, I'm not even sure if they have any volume controls at all, even if you were to open up your case, and mess with the modem itself...
But in any case, about the only way to change the volume would be to open the thing up and see if you can adjust it directly on the modem... But be careful!
In fact, my real recommendation is to just live with it and not try to "fix" it... You might end up doing more harm than its worth...
Alternately, you can buy a new modem, and switch them... My girlfriend's computer and mine were both bought at the same time, and they're both Compaq's, yet they're slighlty different models... Her modem's dialup noises are a LOT louder than mine, most likely because her comp has a different modem model...
