Just update windows, the msblast virus is knocked out by the latest updates for window XP
|
What would him living 5 miles away from you have to do with you getting the worm?
|
i heard on the news that, the person doing the virus is suposed to be uploading it tonight at 11pm and it is allready 10:15pm
and i have a strong chance of getting the virus, i dont have a single firewall i am connected through a network, the internet comp is in my bros room and i am in my room cinnected through the network, i get pop-ups every 2 seconds! |
if they both have the cable internet, then they are probably tied into each other. I remember when my brother networked 2 computers in my house and didnt take sharing off, lots and lots of viruses poped up on my computer.
|
Everyone around me has that virus.. I just go on day by day(with the patch). The bad part is, I'm on a LAN. So if one of us gets it, we all get it. We all have the patch, so I don't think it's still possible.

My brothers work has win 98, and he ended up getting it. He said all the computers were shutting off, and coming back on. It was crazy.
But before this happened, I thought that only 2000 and XP can get it. -Camaro- |
Everyone else BUT me has the virus, pretty much.
I then laugh at them and show them why they should have stuck with never upgrading big things (Such as AOL, MSN, Windows, etc.) like me. I have windows 98 and happy with it :D [edit] http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/ technet/security/virus/alerts/msblaster.asp is the patch for that, by the way. |
Theres only patches for XP,2000, server 2003, and nt 4, I dont think that windows 98 has the same thing that the *worm* exploits.
|
Windows 98 doesn't have that vulnerability, according to all the reports (including from Microsoft and various anti-virus companies). So it's (at least theoretically) impossible for the worm to infect Windows 98.
Perhaps your brother's work just has NT/2000/XP on a central server? That way the network would be down, but the actual Win98 computers themselves should be fine. Everyone who has NT/2000/XP, I urge you to patch it. NOW. *feels lucky he hasn't upgraded to XP yet* =) |
I have windows 98 and happy with it :D I have Win XP Pro and everything has worked great for me. I think people are still just going through the same stages as when Win 95 was released and nobody wanted to switch from Win 3.x thinking Win 95 was just one big problem. |

It doesn't...
Only XP/2000/NT/Server editions have the security flaw...because the exploited file is something new in those versions... 98 and below doesn't even have the function in question (it may have a similar file, but not a flawed one like the new versions have)... I believe I read that the purpose of the file that causes this security breach is something to do with networking and/or file sharing... That is one of the main things that they beefed up in XP/2000/NT/Server...which is why it is new to them... What all of this means is that Win 98 and lower boxes can't get this worm through its normal means of infection... I suppose one could hypothetically install the virus on a 98 box if they wanted to... But as far as becoming infected by the worm sneaking its way through a flawed system, it can't happen, because 98 and below doesn't have that flaw... As for why a network of Win 98 boxes went down at that office, my assumption agrees with Crispy's assessment... The network was probably routed through a vulnerable computer, which got it, and knocked the network out... |
If you have Windows XP, you do have a firewall. In the control panel, go to Network Connections and right click on your LAN connection, then select properties. Click on the Advanced tab and you will see a checkbox saying "Protect my computer by limiting access..." Check that, hit OK. Instant firewall.
Not the best firewall in the world, but it does give some protection against the worm. |
Are you high man?! I'm on the second story of a building if thats what you mean. Everyone wanted Windows 95. A few people I talked to didn't like the new interface or the problems they had trying to run some DOS games. So obviously not everyone wanted it. I was iffy at first too but after using it I wouldn't have wanted to go back. It was hip, it was new, if you didnt have Win95 you were obsolete. Well that's certainly what Microsoft wanted you to think :P. |
I agree... Changed interface often scares people off, or makes them incorrectly accuse the different thing as being "bad"...
In fact, when I first messed around with an XP box, I was quite a bit uncomfortable with it... And it really doesn't work too differently than 98 (on the surface, anyways), it just looks different than I'm used to... So I "didn't like it"... Of course, I've recently had a bit more experience with some XP boxes, so I'm getting used to it, even though I'm content to stick with my 98 until I'm absolutely forced to upgrade...lol Now that I think about it, a good portion of my "dislike" for Apple computers probably stems from the different look they have, rather than any decently founded gripes... I'm sure they work just fine, I just don't feel right working on one... |

There are a lot of options to set Win XP to have the classic look. So the interface on my computer looks pretty much just like Win9x. Although there are a few new features I like for certain things like having item grouping in folders which works well with a date sort in my downloads folder so I can quickly figure out how old the files are to find what I'm looking for. |
