Im pretty sure they only add critical system updates, this one turned out to be critical, but they still might have seen otherwise.

They actually add a lot more than the critical stuff. Just occasionally they decide not to add the patch to the system. In one case it was for "Wait 'till Service Pack 2" reasons.

Ok, only stuff they deem critical then. :p

I'm running 98 on this computer, but I can tell you that I've never updated anything on it from Microsoft's updater... And I've had it since Christmas of 99...
I've upgraded a few programs here and there, of course, like getting new versions of Flash and things like that, but I've never actually followed through on any of the official Microsoft auto-updates, or ever bothered to check Microsoft's page for updates on my own... In fact, I'm even still running IE 5.0... So if the majority of XP users are like me, then there's your answer... Not enough people even bother with the updates, "critical" or not... |

msblast.exe is a poorly made virus, its easy to get rid of, but it dont give you the time to do it, it only effects users running Windows 2000, Windows NT, Windows XP and above, the only windows systems safe (for now) are Windows 3.1, 95, 98 and ME.
Also dont make the mistake i made on XP of not realising u got it, then quick formating ur HDD, as then the Symantec and other removal tools wont work, as they search for the file on the hard drive, only then if it finds it, will it erase it from memory and the registery values, also this does screw up the Windows XP firewall, the only firewall currently able to stop the virus getting on until you have the patch from microsoft. Even if you get the patch after formating, it will still run and screw with your system until you find a way to remove it permanantly without the removal tools, as i just said which wont work cuz msblast.exe isnt on the local drives. Are you joking me... Really? You made a mistake there, as ME is not safe against this Virus. It is actually in with the list of other OS that are subjected to getting this. Also, if you don't already know, ME is the most unstable OS going that Windows has released, they never made the time to actually fix most of the bugs, and errors that was in ME, all they really wanted to do was release ME so it would make Microsoft look somewhat "good" compared to the other OS creators. --Lee |

Actually, WTS is right about that. ME is completely immune to the virus, unless you decide to download it and run it manually somewhow. :)

Then why did Norton Internet Security 2003 not stop it? The firewall was up to date, and it was enabled.

Norton Internet Security 2003 was configured to allow the win32 services thing to act as a server? Norton Internet Security 2003 was configured improperly? Norton Internet Security 2003 was turned off? It could have just been the one firewall, but any good quality firewall that is properly configured will stop the worm from getting through it.

actually you are wrong, because when i spoke to my ISP tech support line, they said that Windows XP firewall was the only 1 that was able to stop it at that time

And when has tech support ever been correct?

Especially when it's ISP tech support. ISP tech support tends to.. um... SUCK horribly. From my experience anyways that's the case.

Thankfully I've never had to deal with my ISP's tech support, my Grandpa does that. I just have to deal with gateway tech support, which is to say, talking to highly untrained monkeys. They have never actually helped, they either did nothing or made it worse.

Even by saying that about their tech support, your not putting them down hard enough. From all of my experiences they have gone from trying to help me, making the problem worse, then telling me to format.

Whats really fun is to play around with the ISP tech support. I continued to complain to earthlink that I couldn't log in to my email. They insisted there was a problem. The tech support guy was shocked when I showed him a screen shot of me checking my email.
