Lost all my data. BYOND source codes, Mod data, web site html files, everything.

I don't see any point me coming on BYOND anymore now. I've lost years and years worth of data. My backups are too old to be of any use.

See ya ppl!

[Edit] I'm running a new Mechwarrior RPG and I'm looking for people to join:

[Edit 2] This thread isn't about asking people how to backup files!!!!!

I'm simply annoucing that there's gonna no more games with Da_Rushyo next to them.

Definitely sucks.

To avoid this myself, I take the following actions:

- Code is checked into CVS on a remote machine in another state every half hour or so (thanks, Gazoot!)

- Each day the code is zipped up and uploaded to BYOND as a library.

- Every once in a while all my code is burned to a DVD.

Each day's work is on a minimum of three machines.

Since you've experienced the pain of a loss, I strongly encourage you to start doing something similar now...it WILL happen again.

In English?

I can't even get on the net every day, never mind back up 40 sources. Plus I'm very careful about the amount of space I use on BYOND. I'm a pretty big space hog.

No DVD or CD writer.

My backup on my parent's machine was lost about a week ago when they added some hardware and ended up wiping the whole PC.

CVS is a source control system that keeps track of the different versions you've created over time, so you can get back old versions of the code at anytime.

A floppy perhaps? A zip drive? This is a networked world...it's easy to get 20megs of space on some server somewhere. I believe digitalmouse provides cheap server space, for example.

At worst, you can spend (or talk your parents into spending) a few dollars for something like a zip drive. If you don't have a way to backup data on a computer, then the computer isn't useful for much more than being a doorstop.

Dead, I'm a gamer not a business.

I don't have any money to throw around on setting up my PC. Getting a zip drive or buying hosting space is the last thing on my mind.

I repeat:

My computer is not a workstation it is simply for gaming.

So THAT'S why you emailed the source for that thing to me instead of just giving me the executable. =P
