I am ordering this stuff today and I need to be sure that I won't need anything else. The only thing I didn't order is a floppy drive and a modem because I already have those, but I have nothing else. So if there is anything that I am missing please tell me. And one more question, when I get it all put together, how will I assign the drives and stuff, do I need any special software or anything?

Do you mean the fan that's in the powerbox? Because it has one of those, the CPU also has a heatsink. I have a mouse and I will be getting the ethernet HUB a little later, once I get a new monitor and video card. And for the OS I'm gonna use Windows 98SE, I already am pretty good with it and I don't want to have to learn XP, plus XP eats up a lot of RAM while 98 doesn't and is compatible with pretty much every game.

The CPU needs a fan. From the sound of it, you've already got a CPU fan, though, so no problems there.
Windows 98SE is a good choice. =) I hear Windows XP Professional isn't too bad, though (I might even be getting it in the near future). My ideal OS configuration would be a dual boot system, maybe something like this: - Linux (at the moment I'm using RedHat 8) - Windows 98SE (at the moment I'm using Windows ME, yargh! I do have 98, but not 98SE, and I need SE's extra features - so I have to use ME, which has them but is one !&^@$(#$% of an OS) - Windows XP Professional (so I can have a stable version of Windows - 98SE would be included so I can run games that XP doesn't support) Of course, before I get all that I need a decent Ethernet hub/router, so I can network my PCs properly and access the internet (broadband) via both of them. Sigh. The trials of having to prioritise a low budget. |

Well I ordered it :). It takes 24hrs processing and 3-4 days shipping so it should be here thursday or friday(they're closed on weekends). Wish me luck! If anyone wants any computer hardware http://www.newegg.com is an awsome site. I got an ASUS ANV7something for $70. They have some great deals so if you're looking to build a computer or replace parts I HIGHLY recommend that site.

Better than on 2000, certainly - Windows 2000 wasn't even designed for games. XP was. =)
From what I've heard, it's mostly (but not always) DOS games that have problems. Sometimes they plain just don't run, and sometimes they run but not properly (for example, there might be no sound). Older Windows games can have problems, too - I've talked to people that were trying to run Thief: The Dark Project on Windows XP and just couldn't get it to work. It seems to work for some people, but not others. XP Pro is generally recognised as being more likely to work than XP Home, but it's not certain either way. It's a bit like cancer, really - nobody knows what the cause is, but they can work out ways to reduce the probability of getting it. If XP works, great! If not, I'd like to have a backup so I can play all my old DOS games. Commander Keen and Monkey Island may not be the newest games, but they are among the best I own, and I own quite few games. So I'd rather not take the risk of losing the ability to play them. =) |

If I have a heatsink and fan that comes with the processor, but not a thermal pad or grease, will the heatsink still do it's job?

If you have a little more to spend, a good CD-RW/DVD-RW drive is always something you would want also (I know you stated a CD/DVD but I am fond of my new ability to burn copies), and you could never go wrong with a good desktop program(I favor Windows XP or Linux).
But it sounds like you will have a pretty nice gaming desktop, a little like the one I built, but I can't name everything I have off the top of my head.
