Does anyone know a good website or nation wide(U.S.) that sells cheap, refurbished systems with monitor that are pretty decent, I'm not looking to pay more than $300 and I wan't a pretty decent one(around 500Mhz and 10GB) I'd really appreciet it if you'd help.
I can't give you any retailers that deal in this, but I can tell you 500mhz is not such a good idea for gaming in our current age, that is if my assumptions are correct that you want a gaming machine. A few local shops down here sell 1.3ghz, 40gb HDs for 250 dollars, I am thinking about spending some dough for one of their 40gb HDs, since I currently have a crappy Gateway which the package only offered my mom(Computer idiot!) a 20gb HD. In the end, after about 5 games the HD is completely full, and not to ignore how incredibly slow and crappy this computer is. 2.1ghz, and 128MB ram, from my experience with Gateway computers, I would have to say that they are the most low quality computers you can buy. Out of the 3 I'v had, they have just gotten worse and worse.

Dude, you need to get a Dell! My Dell hasnt crashed a single time ever since I got mine a year ago! My only problem with Dell is the operating system they sell is Windows XP Home Edition =-(.

It doesn't matter if you buy a Dell or Gateway, crashing is problems that deal with programs not agreeing with your OS, or programs not being able to run with other programs. Dell and Gateway have nothing to do with the OS except for distributing it, so they both only crash based on the users choice in the programs. All my friend's have Dells, and they are ok computers, but I prefer to build my own. It's much cheaper, reliable, and more customizable.

They are only reliable if you are good at it =-). You also wont beleive how many programs I am running as of now, ill give you a few.

1) Adobe Photoshop
2) Internet Explorer
3) Ultima Online
4) Dreammaker

Hehe and these are all in the taskbar too.. I doubt my computer will live long hehe =-O.

Actually, computers are easily manufactured.... There are some pretty head on guides that makes it basically like making a lego house, except your using screws and expensive parts, well maybe a better example is fixing your T.V. remote after it falls down a flight of stairs. Even if you are good at it and can assemble a P.C. in under 30 minutes, that doesn't mean its going to make a good computer(Especialy if it was made in 30 minutes, yuck!), its the parts put inside it that will make it good, of course if you know anything about hardware then its strongly suggested that you don't build one. Plus, the current programs you listed simply don't have anything to do with each other, which means they aren't going to clash. The other case is, they are all made to run on the windows platform, meaning that they are made to be able to run with each other. If you want a madhouse, run a bunch of screwy beta programs all at once :), I don't mean beta games but like beta ftp clients, documenting programs, mpeg displayers, etc..

20gb HD, 2.1 ghz is damn good. You just need a few hundred more megs of ram, and you have one damn good computer there. I have a 9gb HD, and I can fit more games on that than you said you can on yours, so dont even start complaining.

Yea, but I prefer top notch online games and modifications. My half-life folder started at around 600megs, now it's up to 5.3gigs with modification and map files. I had to delete Alien versus Predator 2 because it was filling up 2gigs of just the game. Then there is Serious Sam: The Second Encounter, and Serious Sam #1. I have a few mods for SS:Second Encounter, and it totals up with number 1 for 3gigs. Then there's Starcraft and the entire Warcraft series, which barely takes up a gig. Then there are all my necassary files and BYOND, which is at a pretty high stake in my memory. Then I have to have room for my sisters music piracy, all 1500 or so songs equals to about 9gigs.

Screw the music, tell her to get rid of it. I wasnt taking mods into account.

I only have 1 computer in this house, if I did that then I would probably be grounded or something, since it is the "family" computer.

Calmly explain to your parents why its bad to have 9 gigs of music on your computer. Or, just tell them that its illegal and their gonna go to jail for it. Either one might work.

Lol, i have a 1.5 ghrz computer with 45 gigs and 384 ram, mine runs fine, but mine is a vaio, i have never had a major issue with it, i would be more worried about the graphics card.
In response to Jotdaniel
You must consider this, my mom doesn't care that it's illegal and my sister burns her a cd every now and then, meaning I don't really have anyone on my side.

Yes it does, if you buy a computer with crap parts it is more likely to have errors. The OS doesn't run as good, the programs don't run as good and you get incompatibility problems. Truely it does matter what brand you buy. Dell's are decent if you want a computer for the sake of surfing the net. Compaq/ibm/gateway are all crap. They take the cheapest parts and the smallest hard drive and put them in a computer and get people who dont know much about computers to buy them, although they are crap. My compaq had fatal errors that made me need to restarted it every day, my IBM did just the same. But i knew people with other brands that never had the problems, i never put any major stress on them. Well im done raving.

I feel for ya. Almost the same way here, except that its not my moms computer(otherwise it would be the same).
