I've been taking an animation class at a local college since the beginning of the school year and i just have to say i've gained a new respect for some of disneys earlier works such as Fantasia, Snow white and Bambi and the processes they went through to bring realism to their animated movies. I think Snow White and Fantasia are probably better than anything thats come out today and that includes every anime. What are your views on Animation and Disneys work?
I don't know that much about animation, I only took a class in 7nth grade about realism and art techinques =P. I have respect for those works too but I realy like Aladdin. Now that was a well animated movie. The carpet, did you see him? It was so eloquent and it inspired me to start drawing (even though I was only 4 when it cmae out). That is a movie that no other animated Disney picture has lived up to, and I would be quite appeased to see another 1 hitta quitta like Aladdin. What do you think?

alladin was a joke. snow white moves more eloquently than the carpet and anyone in that movie...her skirt and accessories' overlapping actions were great...and disney had to experiment so much to gain that realism of how things move and react.

Ok, we're talking about two different things. I was talking about the artwork, not the animation and the movement. I didn't pay so much attention to Snow White but I think now I'll have a look at it.

It was a well animated movie as in the drawings/paintings. You were going on about the movement and how Snow White looked n the enviornment. I told you I was referring to the DRAWINGS. Still, lifeless drawings. Understand? =P

no...cause you said animation...
I watched this one mickey mouse episode where he was outside and this little tornado came and blew the leaves by. And he got mad and chased it with a broom and then he met the tornado's father, which was huge. It was a really cool episode when i was 5, because i was into tornados. I wish i could find it on video or something. =(

Pretty much every cartoon ever is better than every anime.

I agree. Not only do I dislike anime, but from what I've seen Disney movies tend to be better drawn and definitely much better animated.

because disney actually looks at mouth when they do it anime characters only have one letter they mouth o - o - o - and it just changes speeds...their movement is also way too jerky.

I highly disagree...

Most current anime is much better than, say, Scooby Doo, for instance...

Granted, old anime (like Voltron, Speed Racer, and such) are extremely low quality...but there are plenty of anime titles since then that have an incredible degree of quality in animation and visual effects...much better than a lot of American animation examples (the aforementioned Scooby Doo being one of the worst...lol) And even many that are better than most current American works... Of course, this is not including Disney... Disney movies are generally amazing works of art...

But in terms of average animated TV series these days, anime has them beat into the ground... And I'm not talking about anime-esque things like Samurai Jack and the Power Puff Girls... Series like the Simpsons, or King of the Hill, or Tiny Toons, or pretty much anything recently American-created that's being shown on Cartoon Network, are definitely not as high quality in terms of animation as most current anime...

A lot of anime detractors bring up a certain complaint about anime, "the mouths don't move with the words"... The simple answer to that is that the mouths aren't animated to English words...they're animated for Japanese dialogue... So of course they don't look like they're moving to the English voiceovers...

Of course, one downfall of many anime series is the lack of movement... Some of them tend to show what looks like a single cel for seconds at a time...lol However, this isn't a universal problem in anime as a whole... And mainly only occurs in the older titles, or the really long series in which many episodes needed to be created and corners needed to be cut...

However, all stereotypes have a basis, so I can't deny any of the problems that I've heard about anime, but it seems to me that most people are basing their opinions on a few bad examples, and fail to see the good examples...

And don't think I'm speaking of DBZ as a good example of high quality animation... It's very far from being excellently animated...I'll be the first to admit that... However, there are plenty of other anime series that put American animation to shame...whether or not anyone's willing to admit it...

Are you talking animation wise, or entertainment wise? I mean if you think that animation makes the cartoon, then your calling the Simpsons a terrible cartoon. Most of the cartoons I watch now of days are very terribly drawn, but I watch them for entertainment value. I watch anime for entertainment if I'm in an action mood or drama mood. I watch Futurama, Simpsons, Sealab 2021, or Home Movies if I'm in a comedy mood, which all are TERRIBLY drawn cartoons(Home Movies is a slightly better drawn Dr. Katz, which is not much to say....). Generally though, I expect you to say you hate anime, probably because of DBZ, but you will say its not because of DBZ, it's because they are all horrible. Oh well though, its your opinion.

Like the 2-minute "dramatic pause" near the end of Evangelion, where there literally was only one cel for about 2 minutes. Apparently, they ran out of subject material for that episode. You can just imagine the storyboard...

"And here he's just standing there. And here he's standing some more. And here he is still standing. And here he hasn't moved at all. And here we have a 1/2-second animation clip that nobody will be able to tell what it is."

Then you've never seen professional productions like Akira, Ghost in the Shell, RobotWars, etc. These movies put modern day cartoon anime to shame...

Animation-wise. I'm sure anime has some redeeming values when one ignores the style issues.

I mean if you think that animation makes the cartoon, then your calling the Simpsons a terrible cartoon.

The Simpsons has a unique style to its characters, however. Anime by and large does not; all anime shares the same style: Bug eyes, mouths in only 2 or 3 positions, triangular jaws. Also, the frame rate is much better in the Simpsons.

Most of the cartoons I watch now of days are very terribly drawn, but I watch them for entertainment value. I watch anime for entertainment if I'm in an action mood or drama mood. Well, nothing these days is really what Bugs Bunny cartoons used to be, to put it that way. But at least they tend to have a cartoonish style all their own. Anime on the other hand seems to stretch out for realism while deliberately making people look as unrealistic as possible.

Generally though, I expect you to say you hate anime, probably because of DBZ, but you will say its not because of DBZ, it's because they are all horrible. Oh well though, its your opinion.

I don't hate anime because of DBZ; I hate DBZ because of anime. It's the style I hate, particularly in the drawing of faces.

This is, by and large, a load of crap. I've heard it from anime enthusiasts for a long time and from what I've seen, they ain't right.

Even if these particular productions might use as many as 4 or 5 mouth shapes, and don't have movement quite as jerky, and may have frame rates as high as a whole 4 fps, that doesn't fix their fundamental flaw: The conventions for how the face is drawn still apply in full.
