Yes, I went to a friend's house who has got a crazy home theater (it is all about the house shaking when there is a close up of the ring) and watched the extended version, MUCH better. It was like they included stuff that was needed for the story that was just left out in the theatrical version. They still left a lot out though, I wasn't expecting to see Tom, that'd be like another 30 min in itself, but things like not giving Samwise the seed and Boromir and his golden belt, just small things that it wouldn't have hurt to add. Oh well, it is still the greatest movie ever!

I have no proof but I recal hearing something about Tolkien wanting all six books printed seperately but his publisher (or whoever is responsible for such things)wanted it in three books. I've got a friend whose father has a six book copy and I own two single copies and one three book copy, so it seems they just print it however they like.

can i just say something. first of all, it's just ONE book. that's all. it has THREE volumes. that's all. and no, tolkien didn't want it to be in any volumes, but his publisher told him it was too big and he would make more money with three volumes. so finally, tolkien agreed but not to his satisfaction. so whoever das gay is, you are wrong.

im quit sure you dont want to sit through 15 hours per movie just so they can put in every single tiny detail that was in the book, think before you speak.

as long as the seats are also toilets, are cleaned between movies thoroughly. Popcorn is all you can eat, same as soda, delivered to you by waiters.
A theatre like that would be downright expensive :D | |

Point being if they included every detail that made the books great then you would have to urinate in your pants several times just to catch the whole movie.
Actually I was close to doing that the first time I saw the first movie. I had drank this gigantic starbucks coffee before I went in, forgetting how long the movie was and also how much you can miss if you go to the bathroom. (I went while they were talking at the split path in moria.) | |

As far as overall quality of the books goes, they're all equally good...
The second book has more action, though...and the importance of some of the characters becomes clearer... So if that's what you're wanting, this movie will probably be better for you... | |

I would sit through it all, or at least if they were staying true to the books I'd now when there was a slow moment and make a dash for the restroom then. I would enjoy vast 15 hour movies greatly, just because you aren't up to the challenge doesn't mean others are. | |
As a matter of fact I would sit through 15 hours of it if it were that long, but I know a lot of my freinds that walked out of the three hour version. They would only get true fans of the book to go see this movie, and sadly there aren't enough of those for the theator to make enough money to keep showing the film.
