Everyone on BYOND is at someone elses trout. Its getting pathetic. Everyone just argues with someone else and most people just aren't happy with each other. I'm here-by announcing. I quit. I will sometimes visit you all but i will not be here a lot. I'm sick off all this fighting. If BYOND cleans up some of the people who just like to pick on the newbies then i will think about coming back. Until that day. Farewell.

Have a good one,
DR.
i agree with your statement

The people who pick on the newbies do not represent BYOND. Remember that.

If you look at the helpful folks like Gughunter, Deadron, and Zilal, who see nothing wrong with making their real-life names available, you'll see that BYOND is a very friendly place. I can name several examples of newbie-bashing people who consider themselves BYOND veterans, of whom I definitely think otherwise. It doesn't matter if I have no doubts of their coding abilities (though I do) -- it's their behaviour alone that marks them as "inexperienced" in my books.

Basically, if you look for evil, you'll see evil. If you look for good, you'll see good. Sure, BYOND has its problems with arrogant twerps, and with power-hungry older jerks, but if you stay out of the problem areas, you'll find good, honest folks.

Hedgerow Hall is the best sample of the game community as I see it -- there are badgers with nothing better to do than to bash their way around pointlessly under a facade of roleplaying, and from time to time they get on your nerves, but for the most part, everyone is willing to be social and to just plain get along.

I do get the impression that we all should be a lot more ban-happy, however -- lots of these kids don't understand that posting is a privilege, not a right. Heck, some of 'em have even tried the Right to Free Speech defense.

Here is how I feel about this:
It is not BYOND's job to play Chaperon outside the forums. If you mean that this treatment towards newbies goes on within the forums, I disagree. I believe there is a difference between newbies and idiots. Most idiots will always be considered newbies, and they are really the ones that make newbies look bad. There have been many newbies showing up lately who show intelligence. Digitalmouse was a newbie not too long ago. If you noticed, he was never bashed like other newbies. Maybe that's because he is not an idiot. That proves my statement that, on the forum, the only people who normally get "picked on" are idiots, and that is just when they say things like, "what si eht CoDez4 som DBZ stuf?" That, is really annoying, and people tend to get out of hand every now and then and say some pretty offensive things towards these types of people.

This should be completely allowed.

But anyway, besides that, I believe most of the people on these Forums show a certain amount of respect for eachother. It seems, in general, to be a pretty well behaved group of people (I can think of maybe 3 or 4 exceptions). BYOND does a fine job of monitoring what goes on at the forums.

However, it is the game designers job to make sure people are treated fairly within games. If somebody picks on you in a game because you are newbie, grow up. That happens in all online games where people can become "gurus" and like to think themselfs better than everybody (These are the same idiots who come to the forums asking for "codes"). The way people act within games has nothing to do with BYOND.

Once, I was trying to say the same thing about MUDding to a group of trouble-makers, and I accidently got it backwards. Well, it was fairly embarrasing...

Just thought I'd share that with you...

One other thing, if you can't stand how people are in the world..you have two options..

1. Accept how things are.
2. Hide away in a cave and never come out.

All in all what I'm saying..any place anywhere in the world online or offline..theres always people tring to put themselfs above others..its just life. Sure it gets to you seeing people act like morons, we see it every day in school or at our work place. People are people, you just gotta be with the right people. As Spuzzum put it, if your looking for good, you'll find it, if you're looking for bad you'll find it, its up to you. And in my personal opinion, being a gamer for years..BYOND is among one of the nicer communities I've ever ran into..I can say..there is much worse..but of course anywhere you are you can always fine sane people who act normal.

I disagree. I'm registed on a Forum that all the people are nice. Sure people insult each other but we all know its for fun. BYOND is different. I've been here almost a year (came last August) and since then people have just been fighting "DBZ Sucks" this and "DBZ Sucks that" and the DBZers just fight back with more insults that its an endless chain.

Really? I really never notice the DBZ quarrels. I don't read the posts about them cause I'm not looking to. Like Spuzzum says, you look for it and you'll get it, if you don't you won't. Take a half-life forum for example, you can find some good things in it if you look, or you could look at everything else and see people swearing each other to death.

ok bad example. Ok heres one. If i play a game people come in and complain about it. Ask stupid questions that are answered right in front of them and just never shut up. That i can't avoid. If i were to avoid it I'd be leaving BYOND to do it. Which is what i'm doing.

I think I speak for the majority of people here at BYOND that when people bash DBZ here, it is only because there are too many people at BYOND obsessed with it. In a normal community, maybe one or two DBZ games would have existed. I would say over 75% of BYOND's games are DBZ. So what is the average Joe's way of trying to fix this problem? Try to convince the DBZers to stop making DBZ games, there's enough of them already. This worked for a few people, but most of them were stubborn and kept at it. People start tossing DBZ games all over the place like trash, so metaphorically, they are littering the BYOND community. You can see why fights come up from all this... Too bad there is no way to just force people to make other games than DBZ. I mean, from people outside the community, all these DBZ games really bring down the image of BYOND.

Just to let you know, I really enjoy DBZ, and I always have. However, there is a point where you have to draw the line. I stopped production on my DBZ game when I saw how many of them already existed. However, it seems they are going down now since Epic has been brought back into production. Hopefully, everybody will eventually just play Epic, and then we can whipe out rest of the DBZ games. There need only be one DBZ game. In fact, I believe that right now, since the BYOND community is still in it's early stages (there aren't many finished games released), everybody should be trying to make unique games. Not copy off others. Everybody copied off DBZ, and then everybody copied of DWO, and I even saw some people copying skateboard games. There is really no need for this, we need some variety here.

Ok, I got way off topic, but I do that a lot, so it was probably expected.

Now, talk about bad examples, any..any game that I've ever played even outside of BYOND ask questions anwsered right infront of them and keep asking and never stop..the stupidest thing I ever saw in a game was a guy asking why can't I do this part of the game when it says it big print..I mean big print that its not implanted yet. People will be people, some people don't notice..things.. and it annoys other people, the the fact is theit not always tring to be annoying. Some people like not to read anything and just jump in and try to have alittle fun even though they should have read it. BYOND is no exception.

And one thing people always miss with BYOND, is BYOND is a programing language not a community. The BYOND community is there to help learn how to code and help with coding errors more than it is to advertize games. Games form there own community. If you don't like BYOND you don't need to use the community, make a game and form your own community, or play other games privatly with selected friends. No one is making you have to listen to the flames and rants and constant crys for code. Its your choice, as I said before.

Yeah, what right does anyone have to be at someone elses trout? Get away from my fish!

That was a joke.

Anyway, what you're basically saying:

1. Everyone just argues.
Not everyone. Mostly it's a few selective people who do most of the arguing. They tend to blot out the people who are actually posting relevant stuff, and until there's some way to simply cut out messages that you don't want to see on the forum, you're just going to have to ignore it.

2. Most people aren't happy with each other.
Very true. Many people here drive me nuts. I'm eagerly awaiting the time when BYOND will seperate itself from itself, allowing itself to be run on solitary terms. That is, you can build a program that doesn't require anything else to run. No Dreamseeker, not Hub, none of that. Just make what you want, and do what you want with it. That's when I'll be happy.

3. I quit.
Nothing wrong with that. But remember, you can quit the community, but you don't need to quit BYOND. BYOND is a great program, but it's just that, a program. You don't need to be involved with the community in any way to use the program. There are plenty of resources if you're interested in learning it on your own. And hey, in the next few releases I'm expecting Dreamseeker to seperate from the hub and pager, so you won't have to worry about that anymore.

4. You might visit once in a while.
That's great. I'd do the same thing if I had anything better to do with my free time. I don't like being here so much, since after all, most of what I do is argue :oP Stick around though, eventually BYOND will become more of what it needs to be to avoid the problems it's having right now, and then you can safely come back without having to worry about them.

5. You're sick of all the fighting.
Me too. It drives me nuts, gives me a headache and shortens my life expectancy. The only reason I stay here is because I've already wasted a year learning the darn language, and by golly I'm going to use it!

6. If BYOND gets rid of people who pick on newbies you'll come back.
You can't get rid of those people very well. They are everywhere. What you can do is ignore them. Ever heard the term, it takes two to argue? Well, if they speak down to you, ignore them. That's all you need. I'd LOVE to see the day when someone posts a stupid insult or degrading comment and is left completely unresponded to. It doesn't show good for the BYOND community when people mostly reply to these comments, and ignore the ones they're supposed to be replying to.

7. Farewell.
Bye.

I've always found that "it takes two to argue" theory to the symbol -- a fortress, if you will -- of endless arrogance. It's not at all true -- it takes one to argue, it takes another to defend themselves. If you aren't going to defend yourself, then you lose the argument. You might not think that's the case, and you might think yourself a better person, but not sticking out something until either a consensus is made or one person is finally proven wrong, without hostility, is just opening yourself up to more hatred in your direction in the future. Arguments are never solved until they're solved -- either you stick it out to the bitter end in the here and now, or you get your reputation damaged because of it.

Don't agree? Well, tough, because it takes two to argue.
