Will someone tell me why when I download videos from something Like Kazaa, they don't play at all? It says it needs to download the codecs, but I already did. Does anyone else have this problem? Do you know what codecs to downlaod?
I occasionally have this problem too, but when it fails to run in WMP, I usually just switch to RealPlayer, or the latest DIVX player, and it plays fine. And the sometimes the reverse is true (for example many .avi's that I try to play with the Quicktime player, play better in WMP - go figure).

I'm thinking that the problem lies not in the codec for playing but in the codec that created the file - sometimes these guys rip the movies with either very old or very new codecs, and the player codecs don't perfectly match up to the recorded codec standard or format. Usually one of the other players has a codec that better matches.

I do not believe there is much to do about it accept re-rip the video into a different codec. StoikVideoConverter is a good freeware program that can do that, and allows you to change compression setting on the audio and video. You should find a download at http://www.stoik.com... I found it very good at taking high quality videos of StarTrek Voyager episodes, and down sampling them just a bit so that they run smooth at full-screen on my P2 200Mhz box... saves space too in some cases...
It really depends on what the player needs to buffer the video for your system, there are probably some codec packages at http://www.microsoft.com .
