There's always what I did... if you think reading the DM guide is borning, try reading it at a time where it seems less boring in comparision with everything else. Such as school. I had the DM guide on my USB drive and would read it during school. (In the library after school or during clasess where I had access to a computer)
Alernately, try breaking up the monotony of reading by actually using what you're reading. Start a miniprojcet, or just look for someone who needs minor help on a project. |

(Everyone else was doing it!) Cause posting another link to a slightly less useful DM guide will really help solve the original problem. I believe reading the acutal DM guide is much better than reading Zizals I know I'm not getting his name right, I'll just refer to him as Z). You need to understand the basics of the language, what it's based on, to be able to do high-level code. Z's guide is great for learning how to do basic code quickly. You know what mobs are and how to use them, but you don't know alot of stuff that would be useful down the road, such as what mobs descend from (atom). Honestly, I'd rather have more coders who've read through the DM Guide, and can code a competent, high level game, and we'd have less "I only read the Zilal guide" lower quality games. |

I agree zilal's guide or Z's guide doesn't teach you about the 4 atomic object and what mob actually stands for.... I also learned about area which is again not included in Z's guide.

actually the 3rd guide of Z's guide teaches you about area

If I base my knowledge solely on Zilal's I will become one of those source code leechers who think that they are going to become popular by changing some values and adding some maps.

Cause posting another link to a slightly less useful DM guide will really help solve the original problem. For one, the original problem was disinterest in the DM Guide. You aren't gonna solve that by saying "Read it. It's good for you." Secondly, Zilal's guide has probably helped more people than the DM Guide, I'd say. The reason being just what that guy is probably experiencing: he doesn't understand what it's saying at all. If you don't already know how to program, the DM Guide is probably not going to be the easiest thing to comprehend. Zilal's guide teaches you how to DO things. It might not explain WHY it happens very clearly, but that can be handled later (DM Guide for example. But also the reference). I'd say more people learn through a good example than anything else. In fact I know 2 or 3 people who have never read the DM Guide (even after learning how to DO things) and still understand the language better than people who say they have. "...even newbies who read the guide, and look at Your First World, are often confused and maybe a little overwhelmed and still don't know where to start. And when you're confused about a new thing, you frequently don't know even enough to think up the right questions to ask to get yourself help..." Anyway, the reason I posted that link was because he said he wasn't interested in making a MUD, so I gave him the general tutorial. |

Keeth sorry if I gave you the wrong impression. I understand the guide completely only BECAUSE I read through the same tutorial you gave me a link to. I understand its just that the community we live in now is: Be bored and read the dm guide or we are going to flame you up for no real reason to make us feel better about knowing more then you. It is sad and someone got banned for making this clear. Even Dantom said to read zilal's tutorial then read the Dm guide then "your first world" and then look up tutorials. Almost like a self service thing dude. It's harder that way but oh well......

wtf? I never even said to base all you knowledge on Z's guide. Chill out. all i said is "Z's 3rd guide tells you about areas. that's ALL I SAID. So chill..

I'm already "chilled" as you put it and you DID mention in your other post to use Zilal's guide as a replacement for the Dm guide which usually results in minimal knowledge. I am however sorry if I misunderstood you but if I didn't the above statement is my reply.

Well next time i just won't help you at all. Fair enough? It was just an idea, NOT me telling you what to do. |
A lot shorter and give you just as much info. If you lazy like me i bet even us lazy people can finish it. (I finished it)
The point of the DM Guide isn't for you to do it in one sitting :/. Do it in sessions do one section at a time or something like that. Or just do both at the same time.
