How's this for a player-created spaceship:
Galactic Civilizations II, especially with the expansion, allows you to create 3D spaceships in any form you'd like, as that proves. Click the picture to see more examples.
And I can attest that, unlike unit creation in Alpha Centauri, I actually enjoyed creating spaceships in GalCiv, both for practical reasons (do I want my colony ships to have long range or more armor?) and for the fun of making spaceships. Even better, you can save a ship and use it in future games, and even create ships for the AI players to use.
It hasn't been on my list to get the expansion or play GalCiv in the near future, but I'm starting to feel the pull...
Since this is my third post related to Galactic Civilizations, making it an official trend, I created a new galciv keyword for those who'd like to see all the posts on the subject.
You can create a small galaxy and it goes pretty fast.
It also helps if you turn on color-coding for the regions of space owned by species. That makes the game go faster, because you know where they are (and it's more fun). |

Deadron, how would you rate this game in terms of micromanagement? I don't mind a slow-paced game but I don't like games where the slow pacing is due to having to fine-tune each of a thousand parameters. (edit: for example, the play-by-email alien combat game we tried [X-COM, I think], was slow-paced, but there was no micromanagement, and I thought that was a fine game.) |
Micromanagement is almost null. The only thing you are going to spend a ton of time on is designing ships(If you want to take advantage of all the tech you earn).

Not a problem...as mentioned, you can spend tons of time designing ships, or not bother with that much at all. Otherwise, your decisions are where to go, how to develop your planets, what to build, who to fight and who to leave alone. I found especially small maps to go pretty fast. Been a while since I played, though -- guess I better put it on the list to see what the expansion is like. Also, this game is well-known to have one of the best AIs ever created. The CEO and main game designer is obsessive about providing a good AI, and makes all the trade-offs around that. You can get the game via Steam I think. Erm, no, they provide their own download service, TotalGaming.net, that is a big competitor to Steam. Also, they are somewhat famous for not putting copy protection or DRM on their games. To patch the games you need an account, and they do so many patches/upgrades for their games that there isn't any point to stealing the basic version. |
This rocks. The only sucky thing is that it's apparantly single player... okay, so creating stuff for yourself is fun but showing off your super-dragon-ship to your best friend then blasting them with it is even better. :p
Erk, I was going to buy this but like everything I've ever tried to buy over the net, I was burnt by the checkout-process. Gah, oh well. Give me a human I can talk to and a box I can hold any day. |
