I'm essentially an extraordinarily-tolerant guy.

I growl in anger whenever someone says or does something that's racist, unless they're merely acting out a part, in which case I become angry at the character they portray.

I see nothing wrong at all with people who are homosexual: homosexuality itself I don't like, but that doesn't say anything about the people themselves, and like to think of myself as being the next closest thing to a friend with several people who are openly homosexual. (For clarification, I should mention that I don't know any openly homosexual people outside the internet. There's nothing that prevents me from being a real friend to one other than simple lack of acquaintance. ;-))

The whole America vs. The World -- or, more accurately, The World vs. America -- thing grates on me at times. I have no prejudices on people based on their country of origin.

However, there is one discrimination which I have which I have never been able to buck: the discrimination against the fan game community. Call me old-fashioned if you will, but every time I join a random BYOND game, I see the same thing: some young person with at least one number in his name talking in broken AOLspeak and mouthing off to the administrators.

When I considered adding a special filter to Newtopia that would immediately flag a character for priority review if its player's key had a number in it, I started to sit back and wonder what was really going on.

I'm certainly not going to impose that filter now that I've had a chance to realise exactly what it entailed. But it's interesting to think about the lines of thought that led up to that point. It's even more interesting to think about how a person who is as judgement-free as myself could be so prejudicial...
Don't feel bad. We all (The developers, programmers, and/or smarter people of the community*) can't stand any of 'em.

*Fit me in here wherever you feel like, because I'm not trying to imply I'm in any specific category
Popisfizzy is right. I hate them. But I would never put up a filter. If I do, more than half of the BYOND community would be whining at my doorstep. Which is bad. Also, that would be seen as elitist, and I would be hated by the other portion of BYOND as well. Kinda like Silent Sage.
Oh burn.
Why must you all hate those of us with numbers in our names? :(

:P
Profiling is fine in my book. I think there is a line between racism and profiling that people seem to forget.

Profile is judging someone at a glance to respond faster to problems. This could be based on race, age, gender, or even screen names. If I saw a large male wearing a black duster, all scruffy and dirty, I would assume that either: A: He is here to make trouble, or B:He is homeless and just wandering in, probably to steal something.

Does this mean I scare him off? No, it means I keep an eye on him, without him knowing. And doing it correctly, I treat him every bit the same(Except for the keeping an eye on him thing). This is profiling. It works.

I honestly think that Discrimination and Profiling are totally different things unless the target knows you are profiling in their direction.
Go for it. Now, please.

I've already achieved that. So I'll gladly do it!
I've found through the years that your games will always get these, and that most of the time it isn't somebody with numbers or fan game characters in their key, it's people with regular keys like the rest of us.

It might be harder to filter them out of an RP community, but most "fan game keys" I've had come on my games have either just left or were mature enough not to be a donkey's ass.

except hes not putting up a filter. hes just going to keep an eye on them. and, even if you put up a filter on one of your games, nobody would care. they probably aren't worth playing to begin with.
Your idea sounds good. Automatically flag users whose keys meet certain criteria. Numbers in name. Recent creation date. Non-members. Stuff like that. Don't simply block the users, or even do anything that effects their gameplay, just let the system bring them to your attention so you can preform a deeper assessment.
A percentile warning rating might be good. A number might bump it up a few points. Alternating caps some more. Non-member, some more. DBZ keyword, BOOM! Red zone!

Heh.
