Some people I know talk about playing poker and other card games online for real money. So it got me to thinking, maybe I could do something like this on BYOND? I do not know much on how to play poker as I really do not play cards games that much, but I know a lot about Black Jack and Spades. So here is my idea, in the game you can join either "Play With Real Money" or "Play With Fake Money". In the "Play With Real Money" lobby you use real money.
How this would work is that you can use paypal to send money to me, then I will go and give you chips according to how much money you have sent. You then can bet your chips in the game and try to win some more money. At the end of each week you can cash in your chips for real money, I then will go and send you money in your paypal account according to how many chips you've got. Players can create Lobbies and allow certain people to join according to their rank (how many games they have won and lost). The game probally will be Black Jack or Spades and then later I would make a Poker version if the game does well.
But here comes the problem, what should happen if a person logs out on purpose because they are losing, I know people can have a bad connection which could cause them to all of a sudden lose connection. Maybe they can have about 2 minutes to log back in, they can then start playing again, forfeit, or ask for a draw, but if they do not log in within the time period and if they are currently losing they will lose the chips they put in for the bet. If they are winning and then log out they will lose half of the chips that they were betting if they do not come back within the time period. Another problem could be that someone has found a bug ans starts to abuse it to win, what I would do is have testing phases before I release the real money part of the game, but if someone abuses the bugs, they would be banned and will not get any money back.
Also there is a problem where people will start fighting because they lost to much money, so if they bring it to the forums and cause problems they would be banned and get all of their current earnings returned. I will also have players sign a agreement that I do not take responsibility with any money loss. I do not know if this game would really be that good of an idea, which is why I am posting it on my blog to see what people think.

Sounds good, but isn't online gambling illegal in some states?
|
Sounds good, except for the part where we send money to YOUR paypal, not saying you can't be trusted.
|
Koil, I agree with you, I would'nt want to send money to someone I do not know either, but is there anyother way to get the money?

Sorry to burst your (and the other posters') bubble, but this is a REALLY BAD idea.
No offense, but it seems that previous posters here didn't even think before saying 'sounds good'. You have to consider this carefully, remember that if it's dealing with real money like that, it's serious, not some random [fan]game you can check out just for kicks and whatnot. Though Calcus, you might as well get some players in, who hadn't considered this idea, considering the previous posts here. xD Really, after all the problems you presented in your post, how can you think that this is a good idea? And be aware that there are MANY more problems beyond those. Of course, I'm too lazy myself to think-up ALL of them, as there're many, but I'll mention a few I can think off the top of my head: -Firstly, of course, you need to be able to pull this off - whether by Paypal or whatnot, you need some reliable automatic system for the transactions. Maybe you have something in mind, I personally never used something like Paypal, and cannot imagine an easy way to accomplish this. -Somewhat related to the previous point - IIRC, DM's HTTP communication isn't quite perfect (mind you, it doesn't support HTTPS, which pretty much throws reliable security out of the window), and you can't control it throughtly, you need your system to handle possible packet loses, verification that data was received, and probably much more since I'm not even knowledgable on the subject, myself. A secure reliable system as implied is probably impossible to achieve with DM without running an external program or otherwise a kind of 3rd party (other than DreamSeeker and the transaction site). -If you do, which you most probably will, use a party like Paypal for the transactions, make sure they allow what you're doing in their Terms of Service... -I'm not saying you have bad intentions or something, but you cannot really be trusted. For that, you'll have to make the game open source, which you obviously cannot do because then people will have access to the secure information and how you handle transactions... -If you let random people host the game themselves, then POOP, your security goes down another notch; it's pretty simple (meh-to the people with the right knowledge) to monitor your computer's internet traffic and again discover how you handle transactions, and alter the sent data or perhaps the memory of the game. Again keep in mind BYOND doesn't even support secure HTTP protocols. -Once more not saying you're malicious, but if you have something like "I'm not responsible for money losses" in the agreement, it basically means you're allowed to steal everyone's money as you see fit, and whatnot... -Also not saying you're a bad coder, but you have to keep this in mind. If you have a minor bug or anything (which even very good coders ocassionally have!), as you can probably guess, it can lead to money loss. And you need to really make sure players can't cheat, as well. I actually had a couple more, but I'm tired of typhing and I think I've made my point. No offense intended, sorry, but someone had to say this anyway. Of course, the fake (ahm..unreal) money part is just fine. :) |
I like the your idea Calus, but like Kaioken said, if there is a bug, the players will abuse it and everyone will lose their money. The fake money one would not be as fun, but a good idea. I think it would be good to bet byond dimes, only my opinion. Other than that, I think that is a good idea, I mean you can be trusted :)

Other than that, I think that is a good idea, I mean you can be trusted :)------------------- I wish people still could by dimes, it probally would help out a lot. Though, Flame Guardian, you may trust me since you know me but not a lot of people have been knowing me for a long time like you have. Kaioken, What I would probally have to do is everytime someone loses money, makes money, or makes a transaction, it would be put into a notepad that I can only see so I can keep track and manage what what is going on. I was also planning on making it so I can be the only one who can host, no one else. Yes, I know I can not be trusted and if I were you I wouldnt trust me either as you do not know me, which is why I am trying to find other ways, but dimes would of been a huge help if they were still used and bought. The major problem is with the bugs, if someone finds one and abuses it for money then this could wreck the game and many people would lose money. What I would do is have testing with fake money for many months trying to find the bugs. I know many bugs can still get passed but I will have to keep an eye open. |
