To stop all of this, the question was 2d or 3d? What everyone is saying is it's a 2d system, representing a 3d system. much in the way a picture, a two dimensional object, is used to represent part of a 3d object (and if you really want to get into it, a portion of the fourth dimension, depending on the length of the exposure. This effect can cause the 3rd dimensional representation to become skewed (long exposure photos).
Biond_coder was asking if it was 3d, it's not, though there is three variables which represent dimensions, only two are active at any one given time, meaning the world is two dimensional, however as I stated before, with isometric maps and pixel_z manipulation, byond pulls off a pretty good mock up of what a 3d world would look like (from one angle anyway).
