While working on my dungeon crawl for BYOND, I was wondering, how important to a player is a change of scenery? The player starts in a town and then can go into a dungeon, which will hopefully randomly generate. And while the dungeon design and placements of props might be different, would you care all that much if a Dungeon kept steady with the same theme for most if not all of the floors?

I would dislike to see a sand whale on one floor and some sea monsters on another. It shouldn't be that difficult to only add one type of prop etc., you might want to try another approach.

Most of the bigger post-Rogue dungeon crawls change the scenery by theming a few levels at a time. In Nethack for instance you have a few levels in the Gnomish mines including one that's a town, and later down you get into some of the themed levels like the castle. Themes can be a really nice touch for your crawl.

Leaving with you nothing more than this: http://nethack.wikia.com/wiki/Mazes_of_Menace This is the whole variety if you didn't know/care to research. Sorry if you did know; maybe someone wanted to find out in that case :p |
