Firstly. You probably shouldn't hope to get he sort of success those anime games get. They have something major that no other amature game made with BYOND has. An already established fanbase consisting of millions upon millions of people and potential players.
What you learn from this is simple. You also need to establish as large a fanbase as possible. You don't do this by making your game attract players (though you still make your game as best as possible), you do it by advertising. No joke, I have seen amature RPG Maker 2003 games that have had tens of thousands of downloads, been mentioned on thousands of different websites and more. Why? The game I am talking about wasn't particularly good or anything special. It just had people advertising it, they spread the word to a few people/websites, which spread the word further and further and further until it was mentioned on a lot of websites (even Wikipedia!). In about a week it became probably the most successful RPG Maker game ever (in terms of downloads). And to top it all off, the game was a joke. A joke by the person who was making the game, the game also happened to be the first game he ever made. So yeah. Make a good game, then go and advertise it. Hopefully your advertising attempts wont fall on deaf ears, and before long you will have a lot of people talking about and playing your game. Other than that there isn't a lot you can do, and building up your own fanbase can be very hard, and a lot of amature games fail to do so (go look at the RPG section of BYOND and tell me how many of them have more than 10 people playing, at the time I am posting this none have more than 10 people playing, and 10 playuers is much, much to small to even be considered a fanbase). |
