I am thinking of making a dragonball game. Considering the number of posts whining about all the DBZ games and that whenenver someone mentions they need help making one in the Classifieds Ads secion they generally get ignored or attacked I'm pretty sure it is safe to say that most the forum posters here either don't like the fan games or don't care. Personally I really don't care and wouldn't play your game simply because it is a DBZ fan game. Here are some ideas: Well it easy easy to say you have some cool idea for a combat system especially when you don't elaborate so there really isn't anyway for me to know if I've seen something similiar or not. Like I said before, no dbz grahpics. Why do the artists get access to the GM abilities? And if you have to limit them to prevent cheating you obviously aren't picking the most trust worthy canidates. A client-side saving system using hash5 (basicly, no cheating, but your able to use ANY savefile on any server.) If you give people access to the data they can cheat. You can make it hard for them to cheat but you certainly are putting cheating within peoples grasp. - And many more things Aside from your vague features which may or may not be unique most of it sounds like pretty standard MUD stuff or taken directly from the material you are borrowing which isn't exactly original :P. Now.... should I go ahead with this? I say you should just ditch the fangame part and make a game with a similiar setting which isn't someone elses work like already suggested. The main thing fueling my "willingness" to make this is to simply put every dbz rip to shame. This or something similiar has been said by every single other person out to make a DBZ game. Why are you going to be any different? Hopefully, by playing this game, they might get a spark to create an origonal game of their own. Well considering the sheer number of fan games already done I doubt one more will get people sick of fan games :P. So, BYONDers, please give your oppinion. This is probably the wrong place to post as you aren't likely to get the responces you want to hear. I'm not sure where the DBZers tend to congregate but if they do somewhere that would probably be a better place to get more favorable replies. |

The amount of negativity in byond is outstanding.

I think that if you really want to make a Dragonball fan game. Go for it. You shouldn't create anything that you don't want to. You should make a game you are going to enjoy making. Not one that you are making just to please other people who would potentially make fun of you for making the type of game you want.

Should we condemn the negativity (and isn't that hypocritical?) or applaud the honesty? This guy asked if he would be shunned and he got a lot of honest answers.
If everybody is positive all the time in their remarks about everything, it tends to indicate 1) a very small and thoroughly like-minded group or 2) a group where people are afraid of voicing opinions that they believe differs from that of the majority (or powerful) view. Some people say that a community with a lot of "negativity" or conflict is harmful to the freedom of expression, but I vehemently disagree. If people are free to share their opinions, then they must be free to share contrary opinions as well. |

To express disagreement to the idea that we should be free to disagree seems awfully hypocritical... and if there's one thing I can't stand, it's other hypocrites.

There's got to be some kind of Community Standard rule against hypocritical contradictions, I tell you...

You can do what you like, but why bother when there are DragonBall games out there like DragonBall Epic Online? DragonBall Epic Online was the first DragonBall game on BYOND and is different from the rest in so many ways (aside from the theme, but they do not even follow the theme as much as you would think). All of the original ideas that you have mentioned are already in DragonBall Epic Online such as the icons, objects, and turfs that are not in DragonBall as well as the battle system that is different from any other game.
DragonBall Epic Online, in my eyes, is the only DragonBall game worth playing on BYOND. |

Weeellll.....Yes, you'd be shunned. Not by me, as long as the game itself actually comes out NEW, but that's a rarity among DBZ games to a high extent.
Make a whole new storyline, base it in a whole new world, give the story a whole new meaning, and use the things we liked to give it flavor. For instance, make the same species available for play, but not the same characters. Use the same ki concept, but not the same techniques. Use the same area, but base it in a whole different turf. If anyone knows about the game mod for HL2 called Bid For Power, than they know that it's possible to take DBZ, and make something new out of it. I don't know everyone's opinion, but it looks to me like they're tired of the same ol' crap. |

Patent! >_> "You keep on saying this word. I do not think it means what you think it means." |
The ideas you have that do end up being 100% new probably aren't going to be common enough to set your game above the rest. The new stuff just can't make up a large enough portion of the game.
There's also the problem of DBZ following such a simple formula that no matter what your idea's are they'll always end up being just another way to hit a punching bag.
I don't mean to knock your enemy idea, but we'll use it as an example. Many DBZ games have had NPC monsters to fight (and get stronger for doing so). Even if they hadn't it would just be like having punching bags that move, die and respawn.
I don't want to discourage you from making something, but DBZ isn't just done to death because of rips. There are plenty of good DBZ games on BYOND, and they're all stale and boring because the very theme itself is worn out.
Even if you don't make your own theme, you should avoid using the DBZ theme.
The DBZ community itself also makes it hard to make a DBZ game. You'll be stretched to find a large enough group of DBZer's to populate your game that are willing to follow your rules. Most DBZ games are popular because they'll let the players do anything they want.
Simple rules like no flaming, when enforced, are enough to kill your player base right off. Not to mention that dealing with the players is a full time job.
If you do go ahead with it, I recommend not releasing anything until you're finished. I'm sure you'll agree that the DBZ games with entries like "we're just getting started but we're going to be the biggest bestest DBZ game ever" are just as bad as Zeta rips.
First impressions are also a big deal. You can't really blow the socks off all the Zeta rips if everyone's first impression of your game is an 'in progress' vision. It doesn't matter as much with non-DBZ games. It's still important, but not as important as when you're up against a thousand other games all claiming they're the best.
