If there was a society of intelligent beings that lived on a world purely of fire, ash, and volcanic activity...
Assuming this is a magical world, what kind of abilities might the following have:
Swords, bows, axes... any type of weapon, etc....
anytype of armor, etc...
Rings, earrings, bracelets, etc...
Likewise for a race steeped in a world of ice, cold, and freezing weather, and another race living in a world of rich lushious swamps and forest lands that are just full of life.
I've got quite a few ideas already, but I want to make sure I've grabbed every idea I can before making a decision :)

Note though, a world of "pure fire" would have no mass, and no land. A ball of molten metal would have such a high gravitational pull that these creatures would be crushed into the surface. Plus, the theory about the earth being mostly molten metal and rock near the core has been suggested recently (with some evidence) to be wrong, thus creating the idea that for a planet to be a planet, it has to be comprised primarily of a solid or a liquid or gas in a solid state. If you're talking about a literal planet you could probably get away with something like Venus has (870+ degrees fahrenheit on the surface) with a dense atmosphere and thick cloud layer. But if refering to their "world" just refers to their natural habitat, then thats another story altogether. Not hard to imagine living somewhere really hot deep within the earth. Even beyond that you could get into fantasy ideas like having a "plane of fire" that isn't really much of anything, just a place... |

It's D&D. Not all things are typed like they are said.

I would imagine that the mystical powers in such a world would mostly deal with the opposite of the prevalent element...
For instance, a world of fire would mostly have magic that deals with water... After all, if their magic dealt with more fire, it would be mundane... |

And it could be quite dangerous; if you depend on fire to live (or you're made of elemental fire) and magic is water-based, then that magic is going to be very powerful against you.
No wonder people were afraid of witches. =) Though a fire-based civilisation would douse the witch with water when condemning her (or him) to death; rather amusingly opposite to our witchhunts, where the witch was burned, and throwing them into a pond of water was just a test to see if they were a witch! =D And our bodies do have a large water content, so in a sense we could be considered "water beings"; a fire elemental would probably think so. Perhaps a fire being would even attempt to burn the suspected witch as a test of witchiness. On the other hand, it is possible to carry a mostly off-topic idea too far. =) |
I'd imagine quite a few stone tools or housing. It would be easily available to catch and mould molton rock. A very industrial race. There isn't much they can live on without a factory making life easier and possible for them.
In a world with ice I see most clothing made from animal hides. In a more advanced race it would be more useful to use a submarine to get around under the ice so you could avoid the harsh enviroment and devastating storms. They would have a spear for a weapon, in a fight across a long, flat plane of snow distance would be key. On a lush world things could be much like our own, but if taken to an extreme, a lot of things made of wood. Lots of organic stuff instead of premanufactured. People auae traps to catch wildlife to eat and would rather forage for food than start an agricultural society. There would be more food wih less waiting if they were to get it from a forest or rainforest. Meh, thats what i can think of off the top of my head before I have to go shower. |

Yes it does, and I've been recreating it in a new format for some time.
The thing is I've gone around and made resources unique to individual land masses... this is a magical world so one continent exists on a freezing plane, and another exists with volcanic activity so great that fires rage and the land is burned and covered in ash, and lava. You still have your continent that is covered in lush forest as well. In each one of these drastic environments stems resources unique only to those environments, and the races from which live on these individual continents have adapted to these resources to fit their magical properties. Being that it's a magical world and each race consists of some magical abilities, they infuse the materials with properties that give their armor, weapons, and accessories more abilities. The thing is, I want you to be able to mix and match resources. Perhaps one wants to use metal One to create a blade, and has the option of using another different resource with it or just metal One. if they choose only metal One, then the blade will be a normal blade with 6-10 damage, but also consist of whatever metal One's ability is. just adding one metal One to the blade would cause +5 fire damage, but if you add two that makes +10 fire damage (which is doubled when used on the ice race). Now, what I'm wondering is what kind of different abilities could I add to the armor, weapons, and accessories in a "game setting" for each one of these races. I have a list already of some abilities, but I want to have a good array of different abilities to choose from to make sure that all strategies possible are present and available so the game doesn't get dull. |
Next, clothes are determined by the kind of society this is. Humans put a lot of value on their hands and chests. Humans look most often to the points that we tend to decorate. Hands are in the forefront most of the time, and the center of the body is the most often looked at, being the person's center. Obviously, we are going to manufacture accessories to accentuate it. Our faces fall in line with this rule, but not many games includ such detail that facial jewlery is important.
For protective items, you have to look again to the funcionality of the body of these creatures. If they have many vital organs, they are going to seek to protect themselves in combat, again evolving weaponry. Look at our weaponry. To conquer armour, we made bows, to conquer chainmail, we made stilettos, to conquer bowmen, we made firearms, to conquer firearms, we made kevlar, to conquer kevlar, we made special bullets. Technology evolves to become more effective against current technology.
For clothing, you are going to have to look at both the physiological nature of the being, and the society. First of all, does this society consider nudity lewd? Is this society's genetailia external? Is this society one that holds itself different than unclothed animals? Does this society have fur or chiton? Also, the nature of survival. Does this species depend upon a fabricated layer to survive the elements of its home planet?
Now, for the last bit about the planet. Note that all species evolve from the same basic materials. Theoretically, only carbon can create life, therefore your creatures will have to have either a scientific, religious, or magical explanation of how they came to be. If magical, then don't worry about it, magic is how it is. If divine, then don't worry abou it, that's how their god willed it. If scientific, keep it mysterious, everybody wants to know everything, but nobody would like to.
