Night/Day and whether effects have now opened a new door. First with night/day effects the use of adding light and dark by way of Add and subtracting rgb values to the icons so no messy shade icon effects. Even makes it look more realistic if you ask me.
Then by adding whether effects using swamp colors to other pixel locations. U can make great storm and reain effects. Such as adding flashes of light for lightniing.

Changing icons like that would be really slow, as BYOND's current implementation is. Heck, creating 32x32 icons pixel by pixel can take on the order of 4-5 seconds (at 1.4 GHz).
I'd prefer to have a client-side translucent layer (specified by three positive/negative variables for the R,G, and B channels) that changes all icons seen on the map into a certain colour when viewed. That's already been requested, but will obviously not be implemented for a while (unless Dantom decides to sneak it into 4.0 before they give it the last kick in the rump to send it out the door).
