You could use on screen objects for advertisments. So people pay really popular games to be advertised. Or you could do it over the Browser like every 1 hour a new banner pops up. I think its a pretty good idea. Good way to make a little change to that is if u make a good enough game.
Maybe you could even turn it into an ingame advertisment. Like a player owns a store in the game and wants to advertise his store so the admins pops it up on peoples Browsers. Hehe I think that would be even cooler.
Online Rollercoaster Tycoon could be a good one for this idea. If the hoster or owner of the park wants to advertise one of his rides he can use the popup advertiser to get it too all the players in the park.

Actually its a good idea. I know we all hate adds, but its a viable alternative to subscriptions. If someone pays you take the adds off of their screen. If they dont pay, they get 2 or 3 banners at the top or bottom of their screen, which is payed for by the owners of the BYOND games they represent.
