Personally, I would make the verb create an object and set the variable to the value of the object and give it a null location or something. Then, when you create the object, use a proc to copy the objects' variables.

I don't think you can edit a type .. Make it create something like /obj/blank . Not just the datum, /obj. That's bound to be glitchy.
