I think that BYOND should have a rank feature, maybe like the game, Fable. When you first create a key, maybe have it as 'Newbie' or something. As you make games and post, you could move it up to 'Recognized' or 'Well-Known'. As their games become popular and the games rank up, they could become 'Renowned' and eventually 'Legendary'. I think that would be pretty cool.
I dunno.

A) On this key, I'm a newbie. But I've been on BYOND since Summer '99. So a rank wouldn't be a true indication of experience.

B) Someone, let's say Blu, has been around for a long time, but is a gamer for the most part with a couple of pet projects on the side, and hasn't made many posts that I know of. (Sorry to use you as an example, Blu; you were just the first one to come to mind.) So a rank wouldn't be a true indication of experience.

C) Numbers aren't important. =) Aside from the detractors and malcontents, everyone in this community is equally valuable to it. I'm no more or less important than, say, Lummox JR, nor am I more or less important than Xereo (whose name I just dug up at random from Code Problems ;-)).
Or you could do like everyone else and just build up your own reputation through your actions :P.
We already know those who have been around, and recognize them.

I've made some 3,400 posts in the last 5 years, and never released much in the line of a game. I have made libraries, demos, tutorials, etc. I just don't ever have the ability to finish a project. Either it gets out of control, and is too much for BYOND, or I just lose interest, or something goes wrong on my computer.

However, a good portion of BYOND knows me. I've spent hundreds of hours in chatters, and probably a thousand on the forums, but by your system, I wouldn't be as known around here as I really am.

I like BYOND as it is, simple, clean, and slowly becoming more commercial.

I would know how you feel. If ranking based on number of games were put into place, I'd be a newbie forever. :P My fingernails are larger than my portfolio, since I'm a forum whore and all.

Then there'd be people spamming themselves with clones of games.
People around here are already far too status-hungry; this would just give them a tangible number to brag about.

Theodis speaks miles of truth, here. If you are a good person, people will know you as a good person. If you are a good programmer, people will know that.

What does "Legendary" mean when dozens of other people are legendary too?

Well, just kind of hanging out on the net isn't really the stuff of ledgends. I mean, the stuff of ledgends is when your buddy ends up getting drunk on a camping trick, and beating a bear in a fistfight.

The stuff of ledgends is the kind of thing that nobody could believe unless they actually saw it.

So... Legendary doesn't really apply to a bunch of insomniac, self-important, egomaniacal 12-20 somethings sitting around the internet chatting about game programming while taking a sandwich and pepsi break from their pet project...

I mean, what's less legendary than that?

Hey now. I'm 21 THANK YOU VERY MUCH, and to me seeing someone simply being able to work in DM is legendary. :D

20 somethings

Meaning, in the 20's age bracket. Albeit you have your outliers, most of BYOND falls between those ages.

Now, you have made my point moot. I'll have to lure you into this convenient back alley so I can smash your skull with a bri... er... give you a cookie?

Ooooo, cookie!

So since I'm not egomaniacal, I'm more legendary? :D

Maybe slightly so.

Still, I don't really know too many mantacular feats you have accomplished as of late. -20 on the legendary scale for you.

Heh I was just going through the apolyton.net forums and it cracked me up when I saw this.
