I agree fully with Lummox...

It just makes sense to have post-embedded links open in a new window/tab... In fact, even though I know that is the default behavior, I find myself right-clicking links and specifically choosing the "Open in New Window" option just to make sure that's what will happen...lol

But to clear up something Crispy said, new tabs and new windows are essentially the same thing... A tabbed browser opens a new tab in the same instance that a non-tabbed browser opens a new window... So the setting for opening links in new windows is the same setting that will open them in new tabs...

*buzz* wrong answer! but thanks for playing!

tabbed-windows are a *browser* feature, and not a HTML feature, which is what Lummox and Mike are referring to when talking about new windows opening up. HTML has no target specification for tabbed-windows, and if the are smart it never will.

Well, perhaps I worded it poorly, but that's not what I meant...

I'm not speaking of the HTML specifics (I know how that works)... I'm speaking of the browser mechanics...

A tabbed browser treats the command to open a link in a new window by opening a new tab... It's the same thing as a "normal" browser opening a new window when you get down to it (in terms of opening the content in a newly created page, regardless of how or where that page is displayed, and leaving the original page as-is)...

So when Crispy is complaining about things opening in new tabs, and Lummox is saying that he's not talking about tabs, they really are referring to the same overall result... That a clicked link will open in a new area (tab or window), and leave the originating page intact...

[Edit:] After re-reading that post, I realized that it sounds like I'm correcting Crispy... I'm not... I'm actually correcting Lummox on making a distinction between the two, when there really isn't (in the scope of Crispy's complaint... and that's what I was trying to point out, and apparently failed to do so...lol)

Actually, the distinction is meaningless in my case, because I have all new windows forced to open in new tabs. Whether they like it or not!

I like it one way, you guys like it another way, and nothing is going to change that; so making it a preference is probably the only way to resolve this argument. =P

Absolutely not! The last thing I want to have in these forums is a preference for every little detail. We'll decide one way or the other and that will be that. My vote would be for all embedded links in the body of the post to open in new windows (I thought that was how it worked, but who knows).

*sniff* Fine, I'll crawl back into my hole now... poor target=_self links, don't listen to the nasty man...

Aw... and I so wanted a preference for alerting me hourly of my stock quotes and updating a weather map of B.C.

I do agree with this. I rarely click links directly these days unless I already know what their behaviour will be -- if I haven't followed the link before, I automatically hit Open Link in New Tab.
