Dantom, what would you say to a flooder that threatened to hack and nuke the server just because we wouldnt give him admin? Well, say that to MrFartman. I dont really think its reasonable for somebody to nuke the server and make the host's computer hang just over not getting admin, do you?

And the second note, where did my NES post go? Didnt/dont you play/played video games when you (two) were a kid, or still right now? Well if NES didnt exist, neither would Xbox, or gamecube, maybe not even PS or PS2! And how does NES get thanked? By getting tossed aside like trash and then a full post about it deleted just because it was not BYOND-related!?
YEAH!!! Dammit where did it go! I thought we were getting a response here! Oh yeah and about that flooder...He was writing in a huge font saying HAcking is not stupid but you are or something like that :D

And another thing.....next time you wanna delete a damn topic... GET SOME DAMN NERVE TO TELL THE PEOPLE!! GIVE THEM A WARNING DAMMIT!
The Anakha stands behind ye. I was there. MRFartMan attemped to flood. I really think that people on BYOND should act a bit more mature than that.

No, it's not right, and it's good to make the community aware when a particular user is causing trouble. However, there's little or nothing Dantom can do about things that happen in individual games. I suggest for now you ban MrFartman from your pager, which will prevent him from connecting to your games and should also prevent him from getting your IP address to nuke you in the first place.

I don't know what you're talking about there, but did you post your thread here--where it doesn't belong--or in Babble? If you didn't post here, that's why your post got deleted.

Sheesh. If it doesn't belong here it doesn't belong here, and Dantom don't have to warn everyone every single time they choose to delete a thread that's posted in the wrong place. If you want to talk about NES, do it in Babble and no one will have any complaints about it.

I think everyone should be more mature than that. But trolls do exist. Game authors in BYOND need to be aware of this and code their in-game chat features appropriately. I suggest a few simple options:

  • Limit line length to something like 300-500 characters; that should allow longish messages but prevent severe spam.
  • Put in a time-sensitive spam filter to boot or mute anyone who says too much in a given time frame, like 5 messages in 3 seconds.
  • Use html_encode() to filter what people say and remove HTML tags. That way, no one can use a large font to spam.
  • Use one of the admin libraries or code in a few verbs of your own to allow the game host to deal with problem users.

But these things aren't Dantom's problem; they're the game author's problem.

Dantom can't do an awful lot about bona fide hacking attempts--it's the host's responsibility to take reasonable security measures, which should be enough to deter most attacks. A lot of very lame, very shallow threats to "hack" people get thrown about, mostly by immature kids who really don't know the first thing about hacking, and generally speaking experienced hackers have better things to do than terrorize a hobby game server. This isn't to say that hackers aren't a problem and you shouldn't bother using security software, but don't panic every time some random lamer comes into a server and says "u all suxx i will hack u hahahahhahhahahaha!!1!"

As to spamming or flooding, note that this, too, is something that game designers should take upon themselves to prevent. Lummox JR has some excellent pointers for combatting spam, so I won't go into any detail here.

"Connecting to byond://216.78.0.45"
with BYOND telling people what IP they are connecting to, all you have to do is copy and paste.
And if it isnt BYOND telling IPs its Netstat, which lists alll the IPs you're connected to.
If you don't want people to flood in your games, code it so that they can't flood. If you don't want someone in your game, ban them on your pager or code the game so they can't get in. The point of BYOND is that it puts the power in your hands... this makes it your responsibility to police your game.

As far as deleting posts, and giving warnings... the main Forum page describes what sorts of posts go in which forum. That's your warning. If you want to post about BYOND itself, post in General... if you want to post about anything else under the sun, post in Babble. The deletion of the NES thread was not a slam on NES.

Bottom line... these are Dantom's forums. We are guests here... it's only common courtesy to follow the guidelines that have been set for their use, and to accept the decisions of them and/or their chosen moderators.

Hey lummox....one question!! How in the hell are we supposed to know why the posts disapear if we don't know who deleted them? Or why as a matter of fact...
In response to Darkrider
There are descriptions of what sorts of messages can go in each forums on the main forum page. There's also a link at the top labeled "Help". If you don't take the time to read the guidelines provided, why would anyone take their time to tell you the guidelines again?
If it happens again, get the hacker/spammer/flooder/whatever's IP address. Open a command prompt and type "tracert address" replacing "address" with their IP address. This will show you all of the servers/routers/etc between you and them. Within the last couple, you can find the name of their ISP<super>*</super>. (You could also get their ISP's name by using a tool to find their host name, but that doesn't always work.) Email their ISP (check their webpage for email addresses, but usually you can just do abuse@...) and tell them that you run a server and one of their customers issued a Denial of Service attack on it. Give them the attacker's IP, and the date and time that it happened.

The ISP will call up the owner of the account responsible, who is most likely the parent of the actual attacker. Chances are he'll get grounded from the computer for quite some time, at least, and you won't have to worry about him. If you ever charge money for your game, you can also sue for lost income. This is very important--people have gone to jail for denial of service attacks on large servers, such as Yahoo.

* You can also usually find out the city they live in by doing this. While not incredibly useful, you can use it to freak them out if you can't get rid of them.

In my experience, tracing such attempts and e-mailing ISPs is not incredibly productive, and most likely a huge waste of time. Most ISPs don't respond properly to such issues.

I've gotten responses before, and those were just on attacks against my personal computer. I figure someone running a server of some sort would get better responses, especially if it charges money.

I'm pretty sure I got someone kicked off of AOL by reporting them. But then, I had proof they were impersonating an attorney online, so that may have been a higher bar.
