Hey all,

My friend and I like playing Dragon Warrior Online a lot, and want to play it together - but he has a MAC, and says it doesn't work with his computer. =(

Is there any way that BYOND software can work with MACs...or if my friend can do something to get WINDOWS stuff to work on a MAC?

Thanks in advance for any help! =)

There's a program that I believe is called Soft Windows (why it's softer on Macs than on PCs I will never know; Macs must just be squishier), thet lets you run Windows programs. Not sure how well it works, though.

SoftWindows really sucked when I tried it for another platform...

However I use Virtual PC on a Mac and it works great.

Heh.. isn't SoftWindows the one made by Microsoft?

I find it infinitely funny that another company could make Windows programs run better than MS. I shouldn't be surprised...

Doubly ironic since Windows is basically a rip-off of the Mac interface in the first place.

I don't think so. It's made by a company called Soft-something.

Guess I was wrong. A little googling has found that it was made by Insignia Solutions and is now owned by FWB Software.

I thought I remembered reading about it and MS years back. Apparently not.

Only Windows 3.1, and that wasn't even an Operating System. Windows 3.1 was a program that ran under DOS, that gave PC users the availability of a graphical interface.
That program WAS literally stolen from Macintosh. Windows 95 has a new interface and brand new code.

yah... a brand new code that made it look even more like the Mac.

Really? I haven't used a Mac in 6 years, so I wouldn't know. I might be using RH7 in a few more months but i'm not sure... gotta test a windows emulator before I can install it as my main operating system.

hmm... that doesn't explain your confusion. Windows 95 only got PCs to work more or less the way Mac had already done 8-10 years earlier. They only caught up a couple of years ago.

VMWare works quite well for me, allowing me to run BYOND and just about anything else in a full Windows environment. I use it under FreeBSD, which is vastly superior to RedHat and every other Linux distribution (and I say that after using Linux for 7 years).

If you do go the Linux route, though, you might also check out Win4Lin. It's not as flexible as VMWare (for running Windows only) but apparently has some performance advantages as a result. There's also Wine which is free and quite good, but not nearly as robust as the commercial packages. I've never tried running BYOND with it.

LOL

Actually, the original Macintosh OS was developed in part (at least early in its development cycle) by microsoft ^_~ then good ol bill saw its possibilities, and took a lot of the ideas and tried to make it work on a PC.. too bad the first 3 windows' sucked so much x.x; they didnt get it even half right till 3.1.. hell, I used dosshell till 3.11 came out *L*

anyways, Ill stop ranting x.x; just trying to find somethign to do till my next class *sigh* college is such a pain x.x;

Elorien, who is already sick of this CIS programme

Not exactly... this link has some relevant information.

Yes, I was aware of most of that history. This is taken directly from that link:

In 1990 Microsoft, a software company selling a command-line Operating system called MS Dos, finally managed to introduce a GUI for their Windows Operating System, using exactly the same metaphors as Macintosh.

It's "exactly the same metaphors" I was talking about. This more or less equates to "basically a rip-off."

Which is too bad, since the MS engineers wanted to do a much superior architecture -- system-driven rather than app-driven, which Windows and Mac OS are just now getting around to and which makes for a much more stable system.

But Bill was sure that the Apple people must know what they were doing, so he insisted that MS do it the same way, so they ended up with a very flawed approach.

Thanks for the advice! ^^

How much did you pay for Virtual PC/SoftWindows, and where did you buy it? Or is there a site where you can download it from? My brother said he tried looking for a site on Google, but couldn't find anything. =(

Anyway, thanks again for all the help! ^_^
