How to get your water in 7 steps.
1) Find or make a palette you like for water. I used fool's palette from "Middle of Nowhere"
2) Fill in a 32x32 with your base color.
3) Take a shade lighter and make a tile-able grid. Make the base line 2-3 pixels wide.
4) Take a shade lighter than that, and go through the middle of the line.
5) Take a shade darker than your base color, and shade in the middle of the base color
6) Take your lightest shade and lightly go through and add highlights
7) Take your darkest color and more shadows, etc.
I might add more for different water types later on. Tell me if you learned anything. Not that elaborate of a Tutorial, but its a tutorial. ;]

You failed at killing the grid lol xP, I would also increase the contrast a little

Using nothing but one tile, your pretty much going to have a grid. Lol

Thats why people make it on a larger scale or make diffrent things to break it like rocks and suck :P

But yes, your right, adding things like rocks and more tiles make it way less griddy. |

Good mini-tut. I have no idea why people are giving you such a hard time with this.
If you think a tutorial should mention or focus on something that the writer missed (as in this case, breaking the grid) - simply add a comment like 'I think it's also worth mentioning that you can use this tut to break up the grid a bit more by making two tiles with alternate paterns...' or 'If you want to break the grid up a bit more, you can use this same technique with 64x64 tile textures...' There's zero reason to state it like Reeex did something wrong here. Anyway, good job, Reeex on a fairly often asked about subject. Now do one on animating it :) |
