My first attempt at using a light source.

Well, A friend of mine showed me a base of his and asked me to critique it, so i did. I also edited it to give examples. I used this opportunity to try giving it a light source, to show him how they look. I got his permission to show the bases.

And here they are:



The one on the left is the original.

The light source is pretty well done. You could try to take it a step further and try hue shading to see what type of effects you can get.

The legs are too short, and the shadow you put in blends in with them too much. Make increase the length of the legs 1 (or 2 pixels), and change the shadow shading to say a dark purple.

You can also take the shadow a step forward make it come out from the left, since the light source is coming from the top-right.
