I suggest you read stuff on human anatomy, and read art lessons on figure drawing, objects, and shading before you jump into pixel art. It makes things much easier once you have a basic knowledge of actually drawing stuff.

Wow pretty good links but what all them links cant teach you is that you have to experment with bases till you find one you like.

You'd be surprised how much of learning art (as far as I can tell) is just looking at the ways other people have done it before.
