...It's time for me to write about what’s on my mind again. I've been busy/distracted lately, so I haven't had spent much time on BYOND. I have been checking up on stuff every now and then… I have a few things that I want to talk about, but today we’ll stick to this:

The Guild System

As new information about the guild system comes out, it’s looking more and more like my predictions about the system were correct. Ugh… what a convoluted mess. Aside from the fact that the guild system is pretty much a repackaged channel system, it has the potential to make things a lot worse. If you hate the ranking system, then you’re in for a real treat.

Time and time again, the staff has made excuses for the state of the BYOND community, blaming the problems on the fact that kids and teenagers make up the majority of users. Okay, fine: so WHY are we putting even more power in the hands of the community? Screw standards and quality control: let’s let 12 year olds decide what games deserve to be published.

What’s next… taking a vote on moderation decisions? Making BYOND open-source?

But wait! Guilds are cool because they have forums! We need input from users on what channel a game belongs in! We need to create a sub-community for every different genre of game!

It’s like a cliché from a cheesy movie. A guy throws out an idea and gets ignored, then a split second later someone else suggests the same exact idea like it’s the most amazing thing ever:

And… SCENE.
Agreeing with 1 of your posts, out of [a lot], isn't back.

It's not over 9000.
;_;
I really wish they would re-fuse the Games and Developer, the general community's IQ always seemed higher that way -_-
You can expect a high level of smarts with preteens.

Because you asked for it, almost literally:

Blah blah blah your wrong, blah blah blah. Also, blah blah blah.

Anywho, blah blah blah.
blah blah blah Rhetorical blah back towards Danial.
I think you're kinda... well, mostly... well, completely missing the point of guilds.

Guilds aren't going to be popularly shared throughout the BYONDspace. The aim is to separate the whole "official" aspect that channels have and separate it away from the BYOND site completely. Instead of everything and everyone being part of some master "BYOND" community, the communities will be separated.

We (as in the BYOND community, not necessarily its veterans) learned a long time ago that trying to make things official was a very, very bad thing. About three quarters of the submissions to any given official channel were complete and utter crap, and we couldn't just reject them outright because it wouldn't be fair. The reviewers had railroaded themselves into a position where they had to test each game and state all of the reasons why it wasn't suitable for a channel. Ouch.

Now, with guilds, the staff are freed up for more important things like actually working on the BYOND software and website, and the fan community at large can have their own individual cliques that most other people don't have to care about one bit.
You would have been correct up until this point, Jtspuzzum.

Nonetheless, guilds do still offer more hope of effective decentralization. There was always the framework for user-managed channels under the old system, but at best they were kind of useful for strictly organizational purposes. User guilds have considerably more potential for setting up actual functional subcommunities that don't rely so much on the central hub page (admittedly the functionality isn't quite all there yet--if the features highlighted on the mockup of the official channel-guilds were accessible and customizable to users, that would be a nice step forward).
Although I don't agree, very humorous drawings :]
Drama you say?

I'll get right on it.
Nice art!

I have only a vague understanding of what guilds will be capable of, and an equally vague understanding of how the channel system has worked heretofore, but I figure as long as people have the opportunity to write their own games, the market will take care of the details. But should the market fail, I am prepared to establish a dictatorship.
I call Vice Dictator!
Can I be Co-Vice Dictator?
I haven't been keeping too up to date on what they've been doing with guilds, but I know their current plan needs a lot of tweaks. You seem to be completely against guilds, but I think guilds will be perfect as long as it's pulled off correctly. It would be terrible if it was just like channels like what you are conveying, but I know they aren't trying to go in that direction.
While there will probably be guilds of questionable quality, I'm still under the impression that the main guilds will be delegated like the channels were. An average guild member should not have any power other than the ability to vote for games that the guild's moderators approved.

The only thing I know that really bothers me is the chosen main guild categories.

What I'm still wondering is how unpublished games are going to be accessed.
