DisturbedPuppy made a mostly silly post about Christmas, in which he said the following:
"Also....Ima change it to X-Mas...for political Correctnessness."
I'm not sure if he's aware, but 'Xmas' is a Christian abbreviation - the 'X' stands for 'Christ'. It comes from the first letter for 'Christ' in ancient Greek - which looks like an 'x'.
So, no, it's not an attempt to 'cross out Christ' or any such nonsense.
(Anyway, I don't really find the term 'Christmas' offensive. Why the hell would I care about the name of a holiday?)
The 'X for Chi' (Chi = Greek X) substitution turned up before the Cross became a common symbol of Christianity.

I don't really get political correctness. Sure the point is to not offend people, but it's taken to the extremes....

We're getting away from the true meaning of the holiday season with all this Jesus nonsense.
|
but still, if it's a religious holiday you shouldn't change its name to remove religious references =/
That is, unless they want to put a second day in July named "Gimme Stuff Day" on the 25th :D |

Wow, I just read Disturbedpuppy's post. I think there's something wrong with his head.

I would agree.
(Really, we're getting away from The True Meaning Of Christmas with all this Jesus fellow. Whatever happened to the whole pagan ritual thing?) |
I always just assumed the "X" abbreviation was a "cross" reference (admittedly, it doesn't make much sense to connect the day commemorating Christ's birth to the symbol of his death, but I also assumed it was begun out of laziness and/or ignorance)
