I was hanging out with someone who works in the games department of an electronics store the other day and he pulls out a stack of StarCraft and StarCraft: Brood Wars boxes and starts putting price tags on them. There had to be at least 25 copies there, so I asked him if they buy a years worth at a time or something.
Apparently that's just how popular it is. They get a steady flow of people who buy replacement copies because they quit playing for a while and lost their original.
Even though it only costs $20 for Starcraft (original) and $30 for Starcraft (plus Brood Wars) Blizzard must be making a fair bit of money. I'd love to know just how many people have a copy of Starcraft (pirate or otherwise).

I have a copy of Starcraft, and Starcraft : Brood Wars lying around somewhere in my room.
|
I bought Starcraft from Goodwill a few months ago. Sadly, I haven't gotten it to work.
|
I have about four (lost/lent/gone), so next time I play I'll need to buy a fifth. Although that's not so bad. I've lost count of how many copies of Metal Gear Solid and Final Fantasy VII I've gone through over the years.

I actually just started playing the game a few months ago, and a friend gave me a valid cd-key yesterday.

StarCraft was the number-one selling PC Game of 1998, selling over 1.5 million copies worldwide.[1] As of 2006, over a third of total sales, or 3.5 million copies, have been sold in South Korea.[4] Blizzard's Battle.net online gameplaying service grew over 800 percent after StarCraft's release.[28] StarCraft remains one of the most popular online games in the world, with over half a million Koreans alone playing nightly.[29]

Dude, Starcraft costs like ten bucks, not 20.
And I have bought Starcraft like 5 times. |

What is StarCraft? Like Star Wars or something? No. Not even close. |
It's true.
The first copy I bought the day after it came out, the second was bought for me by my aunt, who heard me talking about the game just before it came out. I loaned the second copy out to a friend, and never saw it again for three years. Then, I got it back, and it was irrepairably scratched into oblivion. The second copy, coincidentally was put in a CD drive under my Morrowind disc in a drunken stupor one night, and caused the total destruction of BOTH discs. The third copy I bought after I graduated basic training, from a Wal-Mart. It was on sale for $9.99 in a double-jewel case. ^_^ Starcraft discs are prone to accidents. |
Why do you all own so many copies? It's a very small game by modern standards, so most people never remove it from their computer. The disc ends up getting lost over time, then when they upgrade their computer they have to go out and buy it again. When you're buying the new parts for the computer there's always a copy of Starcraft in the store begging to be brought. It's also one of those games that despite knowing better you lend to the friends you know will scratch it or never return it. |
I've got a copy of both in my room somewhere's but, I haven't seen it in ages. Between moving 3 times within 6 months, I think it's probably long gone. >_>
