Most mainstream publications have a pretty pedestrian view of "hard". The famous Times puzzles have been known to be tough on occasion, but sometimes they were tough because they were invalid--they had multiple solutions. I hear they don't anymore, though, which is a step in the right direction.

My mom got me a beginner Sudoku book for Christmas and I inwardly winced. I didn't think it would be my cup of tea. Finally, last night, I cracked it open...
...I just finished #7. Whether I'll have the gumption to try difficult ones remains to be seen... but I expect I will be doing more Sudokus in the coming days. | |

In Sudoku, each row, column, and box must contain the numbers 1 through 9. Each row, column, and box can't have the same number twice. Simple as that. Lummox, first of all congratulations on the book. I started writing a book before, but I only popped out 3 chapters, it was way back when in school. Anyways, I checked out the book on lulu, I can't really afford to buy it now, however the preview showed 2 of the pages inside it, I hope you don't mind me copying the images and doing the puzzles. What I meant by it was just that I didn't know if you didn't know how it was played, or just couldn't get it to work.
The first time I played it, I didn't know the concept of it really, well.. I just went about it all wrong, thinking that there was more than one way to solve each puzzle. What I ended up getting was a huge mess. | |

The one I posted in wiz_chat is the Toughest Known Puzzle. It doesn't crack without advanced trial and error.

I might buy this for my stepmother come holiday time: she's been tiring of sudoku as of late because she can't find anything hard enough.
