Since 2011 there was no significant change in design, below is an inspiration in the steam I did. Larger and more glittering images arranged in a grid with little space between each element that enlarges when passing the mouse.

My fear here is that layout changes are more nightmarish than you probably realize. I have some web projects to do, but they're not that sort and will enhance the platform. Layout changes will make the site look better, but I don't think they'll enhance the platform.

I very much like your concept as far as the main page goes, though. I think rearranging the main page into something of a hybrid between your concept, and having the same current topbar and menu, might be quite reasonable.
