I can't play BYOND??

So I downloaded byond version 509, got to the hub and it was all going well until I tried to join a game. I clicked the join button and waited patiently. I clicked it again and no tab came up. I thought it was the version so I tried to update to 510 but it always gets stuck at the 'Updating DirectX'part. Is there anything I can do?

Stuck for how long? That shouldn't be an indefinite process; at the very most it should only take a couple of minutes. (For me, it's usually 10-30 seconds in the installer. However I already have the necessary files, so it's not making any changes so much as confirming them.)

If it's well and truly stuck, then something is wrong with your DirectX installation. I would recommend doing a full DirectX update from Microsoft.
