Leftley your games are good but your vision is clouded. Dantom has asked us to help code the new BYOND games. He would mearly need to ask the most trustworthy names on BYOND to help him code and host BYOND and they'd come. We all love BYOND but why must we pay. I came to it for the premise of free gaming, something unheard of in the world.
|
Leftly, I aggree with you completly, Dantom always has paid for our funtime on BYOND, But didn't you read what I said? There is more than one way to make money off BYOND. I just think, give the players what they have always had, and give the people who wish to pay for a membership, something extra.
|
It's not a matter of getting people to come, Bon. It's not free for Dantom to develop BYOND. It's not free for Dantom to run the servers that BYOND relies upon. Someone has to pay big bucks to keep BYOND running, and it's gotten to the point where a couple guys working in their free time can't come close to paying the upkeep. Unless Tom wins the lottery, keeping BYOND 100% free simply isn't possible.
As for their choice in cutting pager service, well, yeah it's kind of questionable. But if the pager is a bandwidth-heavy feature that's expensive to maintain, then it just might not be economically viable to keep it the way it was. They might've been able to get by with fewer restrictions on non-member pager use but I bet it would still have to be annoying as heck to use if they wanted to curb pager costs enough to safely support any growth in the user base. |
Now think about how many people are going to not pay? Im guessing 15% of BYOND community will not mind paying, 15% will pay but not like it, the rest will just not. They could just have other people host these things, or get a giant PayPal sign in the start of the place ;D

Havn't you heard of AIM, MSNM, YahooIM, ICQ, IRC, nor Email? There are PLENTY of free ways to converse with each other! Think about the other pros. you get by using these. (Which I don't feel like naming right now, as it is 2:36a.)
|
Seems like there's a huge fuss about the pager. Somebody has to pay for the huge bandwidth, Bon, would you like to do this?
I'm sure that'd be five times better than everyone helping out to pay for it, yeah, sure. So, I suppose, you'd like to do this for us? Stop complaining about it. What's done is done. They're working hard to bring us better features and I think they're doing a damn good job. |
Tell me Yota, How are we supposed to get all our friends Messanger names, if, we can't page them and ask them?
|
Yota is most likely sleeping, so I'll answer your question:
You know a little thing called a game? Well, when you're in one, most of them have a verb called: "Say." Try using it, tell them your MSN. |
15 dollars a year is NOTHING, I'm sure even people like you get money for your birthday, Christmas, etc.
If not go pawn something. |
15 dollars a year is very cheap, I aggree. But, why not add new features for the membership, rather than take away old ones? Also, Asohtra, How are we supposed to find what game our freinds are in, without going through the entire byond hub?
|
So after years of using BYOND your going to turn your back on it? Im personly happy to pay $15 to keep this site running. likly since im Canadian it will only be a little more.
|
Well, you have a whole months warning as to getting your friends IM names and Email addresses. It's not like they just cut you off. They gave more warning that most employers give thier employees before firing them.
People raised the same fuss over dimes being removed. Hell, there is still an occational post on the forum from someone who just found out. Things change, you have to understand that. It seems to me that the only people who are complaining are the people who can't afford it. That doesn't surprise me, but I don't complain because New corvette I want costs to much, I just go with a more affordable car, or keep my old one untill I can afford the vette. |
Just for the record. I will be buying a two year membership very shortly here. I am just trying to defend the little guy.
|
Hello! CHATTERS by Xooxer was made for a reason! Want to CHAT and don't have the money to use the pager? USE CHATTERS THEN ITS THERE FOR A REASON. god.

As I mentioned under another post... There are poor people like myself who cannot pay for a membership, or a credit card which is required to pay for a membership. Perhaps instead of cutting off the pager entirely for non members, just limit it. Like was mentioned, how can you contact some friends if you cannot see what game they are in, and do not already know their AIM/MSN? I know something must be done to help the owners, but does it have to strip all ways of locating our friends? Maybe a limit, the limit lowering according to how much bandwidth is being used.
For example, lets say there are 100 members online and 20 are paging each other. Any extra bandwidth is given to the non members, as long as it does not infringe on the member's pagers or pager speeds. Lets hypothetically say that with the parameters i just mentioned, non members would be allowed four pages per minute with a cap of 1000 characters. Well, maybe there is a busy day and there are 400 members and 100 are paging alot. Well then the non members would be allowed maybe one page per minute with a cap of 750 characters. (The character cap should always be high so that the people can include everything they want to.) Being able to see what games your friends are in should NOT be removed, regardless of membership. Maybe cap on the number of people you can have on your pager friends list if you are not a member, so as to save a bit more bandwidth... But seeing where your buds are is a necessity. I know that the membership is something that must be done, but there has to be some midpoint that can be foud where all parties are happy. |
Well, if you read this you'll seem to find both views. I do agrea that Dantom needs some payment here but does he need to make it like this? The few of us who can't use the chat services (parents don't trust us on them) won't be able to use them and even if we could, we can't just auto join people. This new website idea is very cool and all but I will never be able to keep this. The whole point of this new membership was to get to version 4.0 faster. Well that's nice and all but I really could care less if we got to it. BYOND has been one of my favorite things to play because of the joy of playing games but mostly because I got to meet great people. BYOND has crappy graphics but great community. Plus the premise of free gaming is very atractive to us poor gamers.
Many of you seem to think I can't think that this charge is neccesary. Well yes it is but it's also not expected. Were not just losing dimes, were losing the biggest premise of BYOND. I loved the idea of finnaly talking to my friends after school and playing games with them. I still do this but now I can't as easily. If you take the pager away I can't just talk to them unless I have a chat program, the regular byond, and a dreamseeker running. Then you can't just join them, you have to do a wild dash to the website (instead of the convient hub) causing four windows. Now if you ever get paged in a game you have to switch to another window and etc. making it hard to pay attention (I know, I tried on SS13....damn grieving security!) thus ruining gaming concentration. So what's next for BYOND? Full fledged pay to play, leave it as it is, or back to the old version? This is the hottest topic so far and hopefully DanTom is paying attention. |
No, BYOND will ALWAYS be free to use all of the necessities (DM, DS, DD). To solve your chat utility woes, try setting up a free forum or finding some chatroom you all know about that doesn't require downloading anything.
|
How cool is it to log onto byond, check your pager, and start chatting with friends immediately after a long day at school? BYOND Pager is one of the best parts of BYOND. Like AJX said, Why cant we compromise a little bit? Members Pager has the ability to chat, view friends, ect. Non-Member Pager only has the ability to show us where are friends are located, so that they may join them if they need to talk. I think that sounds like a pretty cool plan, and I think alot of both sides of the arguement would aggree on that. Also, as for what Bon said, alot of parents dont trust the internet and such services as Yahoo, or Aim. (and they have the right not to, becuase of what they have become)
They key to ending all conflicts, is compromise. |
