Okay, let's take this from the top.
In 2002 or 2003, my brother introduced my daughter to pbjdance.com site, which, as you probably can guess, was a flash animation of the dancing banana.
From there, we looked for other sites and landed on albinoblacksheep.com which has some user generated animations and games. The videos she likes the most are J-Pop animations:

And, like most people, the Numa Numa dance.
So as a lasting effect, my daughter has found quite a fondness to music from the Japan or Korea. We frequently scour YouTube and other places to find the music. It turns out that the Asian pop scene is rather huge, and I was even surprised at even the number of fanatic fans in the United States. A couple of guys at my work say that their daughters (a 11 year old and 10 year old), say that a Japanese pop group called "Morning Musume" is their favorite group. I'm like, wow, I KNOW WHO THEY ARE, and only because my six year old loves them too.
Take this video for instance... It's called "Rainbow Pink" and it's just well... silly. But, it's my daughter's current most favorite video:

I liken it to Christian Rock; where there are universal musical rhythms and sounds that everyone likes. Then turn the lyrics to something that pertains to the local market; and whammo, you have a regional pop star. Now take the explosion of YouTube, iTunes, and other internet music content, and add to it the absolute dearth of American bubble gum pop; you get a generation of pre-teen girls looking internationally for contemporary music.
Anyway... perhaps I can convince my daughter that going to Japan just to see "Berryz Koubou" probably isn't the best reason to travel overseas.

Does she listen to THE*SCANTY? I think we've watched a vid from them. But I don't recall her wanting to watch it again. Probably not enough pink. |
they have cute anime-theme-song-worthy voices =D!!
...Love japanese music...i like listening to it because you can still get the emotion/feeling from the music and the voice but since I don't understand it I'm not restrained (I'm not trying to sound weird/deep....i promise..) by the lyrics....so even if it was singing about moldy bathtubs, if it was sang right you could still get feelings of sadness/excitement/etc ....its like background music but with the emotion of a human voice :D |

Probably not enough pink. Hah! That's probably true. They're more girl J-rock than J-pop I think. Still, so damned catchy :) [edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-n8tUMVd9TU] |
Wait. Is J-Pop the annoying music that plays during the openings to a lot of animes?

Oh god, that's such an embarassing question to ask :\
