Uhem, to make this short, BYOND needs to get back to it's roots. Personaly the website stuff is a nice touch but we don't need it. I realize it's ironic and it's easy to pay 15 dollars but what about us that don't get allowances and don't happen to have a credit card? Please DanTom, bring the old BYOND we all love. I don't care how long it takes to get to version 4.0, BYOND was made to be free and should stay that way.

I agree with you totaly, but think yourself lucky, for other countries like mine, we have to pay alot more. Mine will cost something around 30$

"At the end of the trial period, we must unfortunately disable a few non-essential features for those who choose not to purchase a BYOND Membership. As of July 1st, non-Members will no longer be able to send instant messages via the pager (there will be an exception when a Member has initiated a conversation with a non-Member). Non-members will also no longer be able to see the exact locations of other people who are online." This was quoted from the announcment of a new BYOND. Non essential features? THE PAGER IS THE BEST PART! If you wanna get rid of something destroy the browser. Leave our pager alone.

They expect us to give out our personal IM information to games at a time. I feel sorry for those who will end up getting stalkers and people they don't want on their IM systems.
It's minor, and DanTom needs to stop losing money at some point. Just use IM, or go to chatters or something. You don't need to be able to send messages via the pager.
Yeah but any games that start you paying for "Special features" always end up getting you to pay for it all.
BYOND has been great, ever since i've started playing it in 2003, But this new update... Its not BYOND.
I aggree. I could create a forum just for it. I have a domain (blastp.com) and plenty of hosting.
Neat ^_^. DanTom, just ask us BYONDers for help. We'll go and help upgrade BYOND and give ya hosting power. We love this creation and don't want it to go the way of other great games (subscriptions only).
Would you prefer BYOND to die over having to pay 15$ American to send messages over the pager? That's all that you lose out of functionality if you aren't a member. DanTom seriously needs to start making a profit, or at least stop losing moneyo ver BYOND, and this is one way of doing it.
Oh dear, boo-hoo, the interface changed. Big deal. |
DanTom once said ,"Did we forget to mention? The BYOND software suite is absolutely, unconditionally free. Oh, there's a fortune to be made, but first ... the free-lance gaming revolution! Come join the fray as we sweep across the Internet and, of course, ... deep into the ever changing lands BYOND!" that is accutally in his description of BYOND. Now then if it's free why must we pay to use a pager? It worked fine for 6 years. Most people will just boycott this new version and use the old one. Those who don't like the membership fee but like the new version will most likely just use the old versions pager.
Oh, so you can't page anymore? Boohoo. You can still play and make games. BYOND takes a huge toll on their wallets and its only polite of you to pay for a part of it. What they are providing is a priviledge. They can easily make that priviledge completely pay for.
Because the pager uses resources that DanTom has to pay for, they are wisely moving it a Member only feature.
BYOND is still 100% free. What is so hard to understand? |
You seem to be blessed with the luck of a credit card *applaud*. Sadly most of us are below the age of 18 and our parents say the famous words "no". So the plan for us to pay may backfire.....miserably....
There are many, many other ways for Dantom to make a profit from BYOND. A membership is a great idea to make money. What was NOT a great idea, was taking away something that was once FREE (IE: Pager). The smartest thing they could do, with the smallest amount of complaint, is to make some new BYOND member features. The pager is part of what all the players have come to realize as BYOND. By charging for the pager, BYOND is no longer "absolutely, unconditionally free".
My point excatly Evi, this new website is a great idea that could be member only. The pager is my way of talking to my friends on BYOND and figuring out good games, taking it is like going on aim and taking away private talks and making the only way to talk in chat rooms.

Lemme let y'all in on a little secret: BYOND was never free to begin with. It's always cost money for each and every player and developer to use BYOND--the difference is that before, the cost was being paid for by Dantom & Co. out of their own pockets. Which was great, but they don't exactly have bottomless pockets. The options here are either lose a couple features because you can't afford/don't want a membership, or wait until Dantom runs out of money and watch BYOND abruptly fall apart.
