So, I realize I'm not the most recognized person on Byond, but I've been here for many years and I do have my thumb print on a couple games (including my own unfinished ones). For anyone who does know me however, I've been delving outside of Byond a little bit. A few months ago I decided I would give Unity a try, and I thought I'd share what I've been working on.
The game is called Freeze Bomb, it's in alpha stages, it's an action puzzle game made for mobile devices. The goal is to trap penguins in ice by using bombs that explode into an ice wave. A minority of you might actually know that I've already made a game called Freeze Bomb on Byond, and yes, this game is a re-imagining of that Byond game. This new game however is a little more puzzle focused, you have a limited number of bombs, and you must freeze all the penguins before running out of bombs.
But no one wants to just read text, so I've got a demo to share. It's a PC version of course, so you play it with mouse clicks.

I'm hoping I can make some chump change so I can bring money into a new Byond game in the future. So if you like it, let me know, if you think it's terrible, let me know.

Wait a minute. Why do you want to make money from a Unity game to make money from a BYOND game? It would make more sense that if you had started on BYOND and had more exposure to BYOND that you would make money on BYOND first. Are you suggesting that Unity as a platform is better for making money? What are your experiences on Unity as a developer coming from BYOND? What's the developer help community like? What's the CnC community like?

Are you suggesting that Unity as a platform is better for making money? It's easier for ME. I can put together low poly models better then putting together a cohesive pixel art style drawn game. It's also better for publishing small mobile games. A large scale RPG on mobile, sure as heck can use pixel art to great success; a small game with different levels like angry birds, better off with digital art or 3D models. What are your experiences on Unity as a developer coming from BYOND? What's the developer help community like? What's the CnC community like?It was actually quite easy to transition on the programming side of things. I also already had experience with modeling in blender, so that wasn't too difficult either. More than anything I myself am making it harder then it should be because of the art direction I decided to go with. Help community seems good, I haven't even used the forums, googling and unity answers pretty much gives me anything I need. CnC, it's been absolute silence, I haven't shared a lot yet though, so it's to be expected, the community has a LOT of games being worked on and shared, so getting attention isn't the easiest. |

Byond carries my interest in multiplayer. I also prefer pixel art for indie games, but I have had issues with finding artist partners to work on games. So in the future I'd like to get artists on commission based, so I don't have to worry about them bailing or whatever other issue.

I played the game for roughly 10-15 minutes.
The only thing I don't really like is the art style. As I was reading your description of the game, immediately a cartoon-y pixel art style came to mind. I think that would be much better fitting for this game. As for the gameplay: It's not bad, though I have a gut feeling that it could use a little something more - though what that more is, I'm not sure. What I can say though, is it gets a bit boring, fast. Your description of the game was "action puzzle game," but it's mostly puzzle and less action. Play the game for yourself and bit and see how you react. Best of luck. |

[...] Unfortunately I'm lacking much of any opinions for the game, so I can't exactly find what may or may not be lacking. There are a few things that still need to be implemented though, like a bit more excitement in bombing the penguins, and some other game modes. And yes, the description of action puzzle isn't 100% accurate, it's more active puzzle, but active puzzle is kind of a confusing term for a game genre. Still, I appreciate you checking the game out, and hope you try it again in the future. |
