i give my regurads and respect to the late Duglas Adams. One of the best authers to have ever walked this earth. the one openminded person with any sort of ideals for science and life is gone. my we all hope that his afterlife is not that long dark tea time of the soul he so deaded. my he go in peace. (er... that did not turn out well)
6*9 is 56, didn't anybody ever teach you the 9s trick? ;)

For those around here that are my age, we were in High School while his books were coming out, and it was a big part of our life.

Well, that, and even if you do assume that there's a point to the question 6*9, the answer's 54.
Of all the people that have ever died lost and confused, he's the only one who can say that he died having found out the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything.

I may be part of "the younger croud", but yes, I've read the Hitchhiker books (most of 'em, I think; I'm not good at paying attention to these things.) I can't tell if you caught this or not, but just for reference, the 'who the heck was this Doug Atlas' was a joke.
In response to Leftley
Well anyone who hasnt read them should do so.

Personally I have read pretty much all his books, and own most of them...
the only ones i dont own are the meaning of Liff books.
