In the future please do not do this sort of thing. We have intentionally kept this project with a somewhat low profile, because we want it to be as stable as possible before we truly promote it. When the time is right, we'll do the spamming ourselves, with our own message.

Referrals are designed to let you sign up your friends, co-workers, and family, and to get a little kickback if they buy something. Strangers are not referrals (and in fact, it is illegal to mass-message to gain referrals).

As an example; in the "referrals" section of your resumé, you wouldn't put a total stranger there. You would put someone with whom you've worked with, gotten to know, and trust.

Legally, you can put a small referral link at the bottom of every email you send and at the base of your webpage. But sending to anonymous personnel is improper.

Anyway, just thought I'd bring that up. =)

This is not accurate. Referrals are clearly designed to be used from web pages which strangers will access.

The problem with jobe's approach is that he spammed a bunch of lists which in itself gives BYOND a bad name. If he were just doing the referrals from his website there would be no issue with that.

i did no such thing... i did not use a spammer i did it all by hand... witch means i am not spamming but i am pasting the same message ONCE in all the forms i thought there would be peaple that would want it. in fact this (according to the UN i might add) is not spam as long as i only put one per form and i did it by hand AND i did not put it in ALL the forms (only the ones that are on topic). so you see its not really spam as much as it is letting everyone know your here..

Give me your home phone number, and I'll call you twenty times tonight. I won't use an auto-dialer, I'll dial by hand, and since we post in the same forums, we clearly have similar interests, and thus, I can assume that you're interested in what I have to say.

What she said. Just because you do it by hand doesn't mean you aren't sending messages anonymously.

Anyway, I have to argue my case-in-point to Deadron, now. =)

Which part of my pardon are you begging?

Dantom wants us to refer people from our web pages...strangers (who we don't even know!) will access our web pages and get to BYOND from there, so referring strangers is in the intended nature of the referral system.

you dont get it.. its not spam.. i am not sending the same thing over and over.. well i am but not to the same newsgroup... if you called everyone on BYOND one time im sure most of them would not mind it so much..

What I meant was, I had already said that. You can put it at the base of your email and on your webpage, but mass-messaging is wrong.

Spuzz already knows this, I'm sure--but if you have a decent webpage host, you can put the referral link wherever you want on the page, as many times as you want. (Hmm, wonder if the creator of the "Hampster Dance" page would be interested in linking all those little rodent graphics...)

And of course I should mention that Dantom offers web page hosting for a very reasonable fee!

Yes, you can put links anywhere and everywhere you like, as long as you don't send to anonymous people without their permission.

But, if someone accesses your webpage, then they have technically already given you their permission to view anything that you have placed within that page, whether or not they like what they see.

That's one of the "loopholes" in the internet policy, actually. That means that regardless of what people want, any links and text you put on your webpage cannot be censored unless your webpage provider makes a rule against it.

(Yes, even popups are legal in this case. I shouldn't have said this, though. =P)

And a good policy it is--or would be, except it doesn't always hold true, at least for Americans. A news site that linked to the DeCSS source code found that out.

However, I'm pretty sure the ruling permits you to remove the href tags so people have to cut-and-paste the address into their browser.

My information may be out of date or just plain wrong, though... if so, my apologies.

dude... there news groups.. there not EMAIL.. the entire point of them is communication with strangers.. and thats all it is really.. its like me posting a message on this board about red falcon or with a link to offical web site..

Yeah, but if everyone on BYOND called everyone else on BYOND a single time, it would be pretty annoying.

If you send a refferal to every related news group, what prevents each and every one of us from do the exact same thing? It would get BYOND a bad name quickly, even if each one of us only did it once per newsgroup.

Leave the mass advertising to Dantom when they are ready.

Being in-topic.

But you are an actual user of BYOND, so you actually have a certain lack of anonymity with us.

If you post to a newsgroup where you don't regularly hang out and socialise, then you aren't being a productive member of their community. Sure, I don't know you, but I don't really consider you a total stranger when you post here. They would, however.

What I'm trying to say is that you should post only to boards you know, where people know who you are. If they don't know you, it is your business to make them know you, not just to hock a post. =)

I'm going to stop arguing on this end, since it takes two to argue. Feel free to retort! =)
