When can we see Darke's Dungeon back on the Live section? I've been wanting to play it.
If you need a host, I'd be glad to host it for you until I fill up my ports or until you get a server.

I'll probably spring for a Moon in BYOND hosting at that point. I need for a faster connection and the ability to access the logs when I can't personally oversee the game. DD really needs a webpage and a handy BYOND forum as well. (Dantom, what size hosting arrangement do you require before we are eligible for a BYOND forum?) Hopefully Dantom has some server space for me by then :) We can make the forum available to anyone who hosts a website with us. Right now the hosting signups are down because we are trying to resolve some problems with server load, but we'll at least make the web hosting available shortly. I don't know if it will be realistic for us to continue offering dedicated game hosting. We may end up just doing some sort of "rotating" game system or some kind of "best of BYOND" hosting. But we'll let you know. If you are interested in getting a website setup with us before then, just send us an email and we can work that out. |

I was looking forward to renting world space from you. DSL and Cable access are available in my town, but don't extend to my neighborhood. I do have a computer free that I could use as a dedicated server if I ever get a highspeed connection. I could always host it from work on the T1. We have a few systems that are always on and I have software to hide Dream Daemon from the taskbar. The only 'always on' systems I have access to are only PII 266 MHz though, hardly making it worth the risk :/ *sigh* I'll cross that bridge when I get to it. Cinnom, I may be taking you up on that offer. |
I wouldn't sweat it too much. We'll make it a priority to get the best games hosted; I just don't know if we can continue to do so in the capitalistic "anyone can buy hosting" system of days past. It's just too easy for a couple of games to bog down our server, which not only affects other games but all hosted websites (including this one) as well. Once we are wildly successful we will undoubtedly have hundreds of machines and it won't be a problem. :)
I'm thinking that we might be able to experiment with a rotating system, something like Skysaw's "Spy Night" runs. High-traffic games (mud-likes) could have some designated 3- or 4- hour blocks of time where they have exclusive access to the server (or possibly share it with a few games). This seems especially well suited for beta-testing, when a game doesn't really require dedicated 24/7 access. Since so many games are in that state right now I think this could work out well. And if a particular game doesn't seem to cause any troubles on our server, we can always host it permanently. Basically, we just need more data points. We've had a few bad seeds so we didn't want to open the floodgates until we could figure out what was going on. |
It's still very rough around the edges and in the early alpha stages. When I get all the item and player code working as I want it, I'm considering making an arena battle beta version for all you PvP nuts to test out. ;) You can test the play balance of the items while I crunch code for dungeons and monsters.

If you can't wait until then to try out the unstable, unbalanced alpha version, you'll just have to be lucky enough to spot me hosting it. I work on it when the mood hits me and often I host privately just to chat with friends and my "graphics guy" Dark_Vulpine.
If anyone wants the latest Darke Dungeon help file, I would be happy to email it. I could put it on a free site, but I am getting really tired of 50 ad pop-ups everytime I try to access them. (I don't want a freaking minicam!! Leave me alone!) If I'm going to pay anybody for a DD website, it will be Dantom. We all owe these guys a great deal for making so much possible for us.
