I need a compiler, and not a free one. I want the real shiznit. If im going to get serious about a language, such as C++, I want all the top stuff, as well as top learning.

Good choice. As we all know, all free software sucks. Anything you pay for must be, by definition, much better. That's why as of right now, I'm going to stop using BYOND until I can find a company that sells a DM compiler for at least $200.

A few books i have stubled apon were really not focused in the direction i wanted to be heading, but that was before 8th grade. Im sure next time i go to the big city (indy), ill stop by the book store, read a few things from one of those C++ books, and see if i understand anything.

I heartily recommend anything published by O'Reilly & Associates. By and large, their books are the clearest and most concise, avoiding all the pitfalls and traps that other books fall into. If DM were more mainstream, I'm sure The Blue Book would be published by O'Reilly. Same kind of writing, accurate and important information, clarity, and teaching what you need to know to actually understand the subject (as opposed to just being able to do a few things in the language to get by).

And another question arises, since BYOND is a C++ syntax, what does that mean? Does that mean coding in C++ is somewhat similar to byond?

It's similar but definitely not the same. If/else constructs are pretty much the same. While loops are about the same. for (i = 1; i <= 5; i++) loops are the same. Array/list access is similar but not exactly the same. Function (proc) calling is similar. Knowing one makes learning the other much easier than starting from scratch.

something every good programmer will tell you is that once you learn a language, you have learned them all. its just a matter of syntax. thats what they teach you in Computer Science, and they teach you howta make the computer do all the work.

i use Visual C++ 6.0, its a microsoft product(duh!) and its got a great IDE as well as MFC. MFC will make windows programming SO MUCH EASIER. apps that is, games will probably have to be done in allegro, OpenGL or DirectX(or some other wierd library I nefer heard of)

aiight, i'm gone.

lol, they teach computer building for 2 semesters? Unless they teach you how to build the parts I litterally learned it in one day, since me and my dad went and bought some parts and we both built one in a couple hours, working with linux or windows.

Public education math:

If 1 kid can learn it in 1 day, a teacher can teach about 200 kids it in 200 days.

No, I think generally speaking any parent has the right to homeschool their children if they so choose, and they do so for a variety of reasons. Maybe they have children with special educational needs (which, yes, could include the retarded), or maybe they simply don't like the educational system.

Thank goodness I wasn't homeschooled. I would now know nothing but religious dogma.

Is that a comment on home schooling or on your parents?

I don't have a problem with the idea of home schooling, but one would think the parents should have to pass some sort of exam.

It's a comment on exactly that.

It is in society's interest and the child's interest to ensure they get a reasonable education. In my case my parents were doing this sort of thing for the church (setting up a bogus school and such) before there was "homeschooling".

Thankfully, I was too old for what they were doing, and thankfully the one year that I was in a non-accredited religious school didn't mess me up too much academically.

Another year of that and I'd have been screwed. Would have had to retake some high school and such.

Put it this way: My view of parents is not necessarily as "wise people who only want the best for you". My experience has shown me that it can be "clueless people who will ruin your life in order to fit it into their religious agenda".

I fear for children who don't have any state-sponsored education buffering them from that. Thank goodness the evil state provided most of my education, thereby giving me a chance at life.

lol Deadron, I fully agree with your religios dogma comment.

Now that I think about it, there was one guy in our class who wasnt alowed to go to camp or do sex ed, cause of his perants religious beliefs. This guy has become the most ****ed up guy I know.

Anyways, another very big problem with homeschool is that it pretty much destroys your chances of having a normal social life. Now I'm not saying this is garanteed, but seriously, your gonna miss out on a hell of a lot.
