A tantalising hint of things to come for fans of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

James Marsters, who plays Buffy's archrival Spike, is in Auckland for a fan convention at the Aotea Centre. And he's revealed that there may be more to Spike's relationship with Buffy than meets the eye.

Buffy Fans, tune in.

Spike’s in town and things between him and Buffy are hotting up.

“ What I know is that Spike has been in love without knowing it, in that Spike has been in love with Buffy for quite a long time.”

The unofficial word is that in the next series - yet to screen - Spike the villain is about to fall madly in love with his archrival, Buffy.

“Spike has been in love with Buffy almost from the moment he saw her even though he was deeply in love with his girl at the moment Drusiala.”

For theatre-trained thespian Marsters, that means more acting hours rubbing shoulders with one of television's hottest young stars, Sarah Michelle Gellar.

“She is unfireable 'cos without her there would be no show and that leads a lot of actors to get away with murder, but she is never late, she knows her lines perfectly, she seems concerned mostly that the show will remain as good as it has been.”

Gellar may be the star, but Marsters is an accomplished actor in his own right, and he's got the accents to prove it.

Spikes' British accent in the show is thanks to a theatre colleague from North London - home to the sex pistols. Masters adopted it when he was about to go for his Buffy audition.

“The description of my Buffy character was a punk rock vampire who was the...and really was from north London.”

The half-pie jet blonde spikes are legacy to a visit to the big Apple.

“In New York, you can't get someone to cut and colour your hair.... I think the reason I wasn't slayed is ‘cos the hair worked.” And maybe his hair can help stop his romance suffering the same fate as most of the villains on the show.
