...what kind of music does everyone like to listen to? Is there a particular song, group, or style that you find makes good background when you're coding or playing video games? Or do you just turn on the TV and let that run?
[EDIT]
Thank you, everyone for responding, but this was not a serious question... it was just the most transparent ploy since DBZ:Ultriment. I think anyone who reads this thread and the the one about road maps and interupting will see what I was going for and agree that I achieved it, but I thought I'd just make sure it was perfectly clear, for all the DBZ fans here.

I see. So you CAN focus on demanding mental tasks while listening to music. If you'd like to borrow any of my clothes, let me know. It's always great to find another girl on BYOND!

I'll start a song I like then start coding, then I'll suddenly realise the song finished about 10 minutes ago and I've been sitting in silence without even knowing it. Either that or I'll listen to the same CD several times over, and again, not even notice it's repeating itself. Heh, I'm doing right now. Time to change the CD. It probly doesnt help I'm also "watching" TV at the same time (BBC news runs all night) without the volume on. If you'd like to borrow any of my clothes, let me know. Got anything in small size? =) |
My WinAmp playlist (which is running almost non-stop) contains mostly industrial/EBM, electronica, darkwave, ambient, 80's goth-rock, classical, and some metal (mostly classically inspired metal, not Metallica crap).
You can see my entire playlist here: http://www.geocities.com/abyssdragon/Playlist.html (Favorites are at the very bottom) I find that it doesn't matter overly much what is playing while I program or play video games, as long as it isn't something that I hate. -AbyssDragon |

But you claim to play better with the music on. Obviously, it is not having a detrimental effect on your concentration. If anything, the opposite is true. Poll everyone who plays games and you'll find that 99.9% of them have music on while playing if possible, and you'll find that they all claim (to varying degrees) to be unaware of exactly what it is they're listening to. It's only these "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" types who come in and start drawing lines, deciding that this person is using music to tune out background noise while this one is actually listening.
I know that you already said you don't know if the book is meant to be taken seriously, but clearly, the authors take it seriously, and what's more, other people do, too. That's why I jump on any chance to debunk them. |

Actually, I was trying to imply my copy of Shape Shifter has its own persoanllity and rewards me with high scores for playing it it's favourite music (seriously, this is what I was trying to say). Though your idea does make more sence... I know that you already said you don't know if the book is meant to be taken seriously, but clearly, the authors take it seriously, and what's more, other people do, too. That's why I jump on any chance to debunk them. I dunno. While not trying to "speak for NZ etc", I think you'll find considing the authors are Aussies, and half the book is taking the piss outta NZers (it was on the news, not much happens down here), I think it is ment pretty light heartedly. Though there is a high chance Australians are just stupid. |

...what kind of music does everyone like to listen to? Is there a particular song, group, or style that you find makes good background when you're coding or playing video games? Or do you just turn on the TV and let that run? I'm picky about music. Extremely picky. My tastes, however, are considered eccentric by most. I've found many who agree at least partially with what I hate, but fewer who don't think what I like is weird. I like pop music, but hate about 70% of what's on the radio these days and despise another 25%, while liking some of the remainder. I find top 40 radio often doesn't play songs that I consider good that are either lower on the charts or don't quite fit the genre of the station. My personal opinion of newer pop is that most of the decent stuff is actually the cheesy teenybopper music you only hear on stations like Radio Disney. My favorite pop was actually some of the late-80s stuff, and early 90s. I submit as Musical Fact that the Golden Age of pop music peaked in 1992, declined slowly in '93, coasted through mediocrity in '94 and '95 (though the summer of '95 wasn't half bad), and then finally died in thrashing fits before 1996. 1996 was a horrible music year, in which every 20 minutes I'd have to hear that "Because You Loved Me" song from Celine Dion and some hideous ditty by Tony Rich Project. 1997 brought us Sugar Ray and lots, lots worse; heck, the Spice Girls and Hanson were the highlights of that year, and that's just sad. I absolutely despise hip-hop, and what's now called rap but isn't. Real rap died in 1991, and don't ever let anyone tell you any different. The industry refers to real rap as "old school" but they're not fooling everyone; it's a completely different genre. My hatred of hip-hop especially extends to pointless groups like Destiny's Crack Baby (an epithet of my own invention), who despite numerous releases have only one major release, "Bootylicious", that even qualifies as a song. A song must have a melody, you see. You can't just talk to a spastic beat and call it a song. Speaking of talking through songs, why is Matchbox 20 still famous after "3 AM"? And why must Rob Thomas look so stinking androgynous? Dangit, it's creepy. Don't get me started on the Ricky Martin fad and Latin pop. Country I hate slightly less. I actually grew up listening to some of my mother's favorites, and can stand some of those, specifically some of Randy Travis, Clint Black (his early stuff), and Garth Brooks. (Call it bigoted, but what I hate most about country music is the accent of the singers. Really. Drives me freakin' nuts.) Despite that I can tolerate some country, it is unforgiveable for a country song to invade a pop station in the name of being "crossover" when it is clearly not. Those couple Bonnie Raitt songs belonged on pop charts, no question. Some of Shania Twain's stuff (not "From This Moment" or other slow stuff) is okay. Leann Rimes, however, is absolutely out of the question--what were they thinking? Right now Leann Womack (sp?) is infesting charts with an obviously-too-country-for-a-pop-station song called "I Hope You Dance", in spite of my own hopes that it would dance back on over to the stations where it belongs. This has been my music rant. The above is a condensed anthology of some of my favorite rants. Lummox JR |
Here's a much better story, anyways:

This has been my music rant. The above is a condensed anthology of some of my favorite rants. Umm... How old are you (Don't answer)? Bootylicious is probly my least favourite song by DC. My fav. is "I'm a survivor". What do you class say Limb Bizkit (my fav. band) as? Cause unlike alot of try hard bands emerging today, some bands (like LB) are actually "real", if that makes sence. Like, they are more than just an image on the band wagon. |

I usually have Wierd "Al" Yankovic CDs playing while I'm codeing. I also have the TV running but thats just for background noise.

Like, they are more than just an image on the band wagon. Explain this. To me, Limp Bizkit sounds like every other "rap-rock" band out there. Their lyrics are just as trite as the rest, and like everyone else, the only emotion they both to portray is anger (which is not a bad thing in and of itself), but they only convey this by yelling. -AbyssDragon |

I like to listen to my Smash Mouth, The Offspring, Creed, Linkin Park (used to be Hybrid Theory, I liked them then and I like them now), and Metallica. I listen to loud music while doing homework, playing games, and falling asleep. It helps me to hear a song that I know every word to. With music on, I can drown out all noise but my thoughts, and the occasional noise from the computer.

Apparently the only reason Bootylicious approaches songdom is that they took on a new girl who can sing, or so I'm told. What do you class say Limb Bizkit (my fav. band) as? Cause unlike alot of try hard bands emerging today, some bands (like LB) are actually "real", if that makes sence. Like, they are more than just an image on the band wagon. I agree with AbyssDragon that they're a cookie-cutter rap-rock band who only manage to portray anger. They have the potential for coolness, but lose it with the whole image thing. To use a simple example, consider the instrumental from MI2: The music is extremely good, fantastic even, but then Fred Durst has to open his mouth and start singing obnoxious lyrics in his horribly unappealing voice. When he "sings" in that one, he drones on about how the critics view him, which is the same tired crap you hear from any so-called modern rap artist. Puh-leeeze. If all they have to say is that they're better than the critics give you credit for, the critics are the ones who have it right. This is similar to the hypocrisy of a "rapper" saying they're a fresh style, not like anyone else, and then proving themselves embarrassingly wrong. Lummox JR |
I found that Shapeshifter only gives me good scores when I'm listing to Limb Bizkit. The problem is I usually only play Shaprshifter when I'm recoving from a night before, and thats the last time I want to be listening to loud music (there is a disturbing amount of truth to that story).
I usually listen to Limb Bizkit, Cyprus Hill, Rage Against the Machine, Eminem and Beastis Boys. Then a little Korn, Three Doors Down, Live, Nirvana, Guns n Roses and Gorrilaz to mix things up.
